Two tri-county playoff games canceled, at least one due to COVID-19
Two games in the tri-county football playoff scheduled for this week have been canceled, and at least one was due to a case of coronavirus.
Park Vista’s Gold-bracket playoff game against Western has been canceled after a person in the Cobras’ program tested positive for COVID-19, according to coach
Brian Dodds.
“The good news is it dated back far enough that we just need to get through this week with nobody else testing [positive] and then we’ll be able to play the following week,” Dodds said. “That’s the good news. The bad news is yes, we can’t go this week.”
Western will advance to the Class 8A Gold bracket semifinals.
In the Silver bracket, Miami Beach had to pull out of the tournament, according to Broward County Athletic Association Athletic Director Rocky Gillis and Miami-Dade Public Schools spokeswoman Jaquelyn Calzadilla.
Calzadilla said Miami Beach was unable to play because “a number of their players were in quarantine due to potential close contact and returning to school late this week,” but that no one in the program had tested positive for COVID-19.
Blanche Ely will advance to the
Class 7A Silver bracket semifinals.
During the regular season, at least 17 Broward County publicschool games and five Palm Beach County public-school games were canceled due to COVID-19.
Dodds said Park Vista’s positive test dates back to before Thanksgiving, and the team has not gathered since then.
“It goes all the way back to right before Thanksgiving,” Dodds said. “Our guys weren’t around each other. We’ve been away from each other, which is good, in this case.”
No one else on the team has tested positive for the virus, Dodds said. Dodds said although his team has to forfeit its spot in the Gold level bracket but will still have a chance to play in a consolation bracket.
“As long as there’s no more positive tests, we should be cleared to start practicing on Monday,” Dodds said.
