Borregales declares for draft, will kick in bowl game

- By David Furones

Miami Hurricanes kicker Jose Borregales is declaring for the NFL draft, he announced on Wednesday morning.

Unlike the other two Miami football players to announce they’re entrance into the draft, defensive ends Jaelan Phillips and Quincy Roche, Borregales said in his Twitter announcement that he will be participating in UM’s

Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma State on Dec. 29.

“I’m ready and excited for what’s to come in the future,” Borregales tweeted, “but first, let’s go out with a bang.”

On Tuesday, Borregales was named first-team All-ACC kicker and one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award for the nation’s top college kicker. He made 18 of 20 field goals for

Miami with a long of 57 yards, plus all 35 of his extra-point attempts.

Borregales has been ranked as the draft’s top kicker by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr.

He came to UM after spending his first four seasons at FIU, even defeating the Hurricanes in a stunning upset victory for the Panthers at Marlins Park, where two of his three field goals made came from beyond 50 yards on Nov. 23, 2019.

Although Borregales is a senior and will be participating in next month’s Reese’s Senior Bowl, he had the option of returning for an extra college season because the NCAA is extending eligibility for all football players in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will be one Borregales out and another in as Jose’s younger brother, Andres, is slated to enroll early at UM as a freshman for the spring semester as a recruit.
