Owls’ Trickett, Fairman will not be brought back

Clint Trickett and Jaron Fairman won’t return to FAU next season as the team’s co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and special teams coordinator/ tight ends coach — respectively — a source confirmed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

The Athletic first reported Sunday afternoon that the program parted ways with Fairman and Trickett after the 2020 season.

Trickett was hired as the team’s tight ends coach in 2017 by then-FAU coach Lane Kiffin. He was previously the quarterbacks coach at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss., which was the school featured in the Netflix show “Last Chance U”.

FAU coach Willie Taggart promoted Trickett to the co-offensive coordinator/ quarterbacks coach position after the 2019 season when Kiffin departed for Ole Miss and previous offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Charlie Weis Jr. left FAU for the same position at USF.

The Owls averaged 324.6 yards (No. 112 in the nation) and 18.9 points (No. 115 among FBS programs) this past season with Trickett serving as a co-offensive coordinator with Drew Mehringer, who’s also the wide receivers coach.

After being a graduate assistant at USC for three years, Fairman joined Kiffin’s staff in the spring of 2017 as a player development assistant and was promoted to special teams coordinator in January 2018. He became the tight ends coach after Trickett’s promotion.

FAU led Conference USA in kickoff return defense and was No. 3 in punt return defense in 2019, but fell to No. 10 and No. 8 in those respective categories in 2020.
