Redshirt junior QB reportedly entering NCAA portal

Miami Hurricanes redshirt junior quarterback N’Kosi Perry has entered the NCAA’s transfer portal, according to a report by AL.com.

Perry, a former four-star recruit out of Ocala Vanguard, was in and out as Miami’s starting quarterback over the 2018 and 2019 seasons. When D’Eriq King transferred to UM from Houston ahead of the 2020 season, Perry was relegated to backup duties behind King.

King since decided he will return to the Hurricanes for the 2021 season, a sixth year in college for him, utilizing the extra year of eligibility the NCAA is granting all football players because the 2020 season was played amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although King tore his ACL in the Dec. 29 Cheez-It Bowl loss to Oklahoma State, Miami expects him to recover in time for fall camp in August.

In relief of King, Perry went 19 of 34 for 228 yards and two touchdowns, nearly leading the Hurricanes to a comeback win in the 37-34 defeat.

After the bowl loss, Perry, in response to a question about any thoughts of transferring, said, “I’m committed to this school, and right now is not the time to be talking about transferring or anything like that. I’m all about the U, and I just want to get back with my team right now.”

Perry platooned with Jarren Williams and Malik Rosier over the previous two seasons as Miami’s starting quarterback. Over 24 games played and nine starts in his UM career, Perry completed 52.4% of his passes for 2,484 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Freshman Tyler Van Dyke is likely elevated to the team’s backup quarterback, while incoming freshman Jake Garcia will compete, along with redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha.
