MIRAMAR — Three young men from New York lost their lives last week when gunfire erupted on a stretch of road in Miramar and frantic calls to 911 helped piece together the minutes immediately following the shooting.

One witness told a 911 operator he was driving north in the 3700 block of State Road 7 at about 9:50 p.m. on Jan. 4 when he heard several gunshots. That’s what made him turn around just in time to see an SUV driving away, according to recordings obtained by the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

“I saw an SUV, shooting,” he said on the call.

Little information has been released about the victims, who were shot as they headed south on State Road 7 in a rented, white 2019 Ford Mustang convertible.

A woman who stopped near the Mustang on the opposite side of the road also dialed 911.

“There’s two people shot and dead, ma’am,” she said. “Two males, one in the back and the other is in the front.”

Then she sees the wounded man in the back seat.

“He’s moving right here,” she yells.

As Miramar police arrived, the man on the line with 911 can be heard shouting to the officers.

“There’s two victims shot,” he said. “One is alive, one is moving...the one in the back [seat].”

After the gunfire, the Mustang hit a bus stop sign near Captain Max Seafood restaurant at 3700 S. State Road 7, south of Miramar Parkway. Surveillance video obtained by investigators shows the Mustang rolling to a stop in the darkness before crashing.

According to investigators, the driver died at the wheel from a gunshot to the head, while the passenger in the front seat got out of the coasting Mustang and died on the sidewalk.

The third man was shot in the leg, arm and abdomen and died in the ambulance on the way to Memorial Regional Hospital.

The victims’ identities have not been disclosed by authorities. Two were in their 20s, one was 32, and two were related. Police said the shots were fired from a passing vehicle, but they don’t know why.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have much more information regarding a motive for the shooting,” police spokesperson Tania Rues said Wednesday.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Broward Crime Stoppers anonymously at 954-493-8477 or online at browardcrimestoppers.org.
