WR Callaway gets another opportunity with the Chiefs

- By Keven Lerner

The top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs may be focused on Sunday’s playoff game against the Cleveland Browns, but that didn’t keep their front office from looking ahead to next season.

The defending Super Bowl champions signed former Miami Dolphins receiver Antonio Callaway to a reserve/futures contract on Wednesday, according to Terez Paylor of Yahoo Sports.

The Dolphins waived Callaway last month, ending the former University of Florida and Miami Booker T. Washington High standout’s time with the team two weeks before the end of the 2020 regular season.

Callaway had a chance to earn significant playing time as the Dolphins dealt with injuries to several key playmakers down the stretch. But the opportunity did not amount to much.

After serving a lengthy suspension to start the season while on the Dolphins practice squad, Callaway played in just five games, making one start, and caught a total of two passes for 20 yards. He also contributed on special teams for the Dolphins.

Kansas City got a good look at Callaway as he played a season-high 22 snaps against the Chiefs on Dec. 13.

Callaway’s release came four days after he missed a practice due to an unspecified reason that was not injury related.

Callaway, who played at UF from 2015-17, caught 53 passes for 685 yards with five touchdowns in 25 NFL games since being drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns in 2018. He was cut by Cleveland in Nov. 2019 and had a brief stint with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers before joining the Dolphins.

Callaway was suspended for the first four games of the 2019 season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

He then received another 10-game suspension despite being released by the Browns in November of 2019. He appealed the suspension, but was unsuccessful and was suspended for the final seven weeks of the 2019 regular season and the first three weeks of the 2020 season.
