Quarrie hits game-winning 3-pointer to lift Coral Springs
CORAL SPRINGS — Kymani Quarrie hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give Coral Springs a 58-55 win over Monarch and a trip to the Class 7A regional finals.
The Colts were down by as much as 15 points in the first half and eight with just over four minutes to play, but with a constant press they fought back and eventually tied the game with 23 seconds remaining.
After Christian Henriques’ shot was no good for Monarch, the Colts quickly moved the ball up the court and Jonathan Fils found Quarrie in the corner for the game winner.
“My guys looked for me and I got open. They had confidence in me to take the shot, I felt like I was pretty deep ... thankfully I made the shot,” said Quarrie. “We made it this far, we have to keep going. It’s pretty emotional . ... We are one step away from Lakeland. It’s been a hell of a ride and I’m ready for it to keep going.”
Quarrie finished with eight points, while Rashod Morris had 17 and Jevaughn Morris added 15 for the Colts, who will now host the regional final for the first time as they host Dwyer on Friday at 7 p.m.
“[Kymani] has no conscience, he doesn’t get fazed and doesn’t feel pressure,” said Coral Springs coach Devin Barta. “He never saw a shot he didn’t like, so when he rose up with it, I was confident he was going to make it.”
Monarch was in control most of the game after a 17-0 run in the first half gave them a 23-8 lead with three minutes to go before halftime. Kellen Cashman led the way with 14 points during that stretch.
Coral Springs kept fighting and cut the lead to, 33-30, with 1:45 to go in the third quarter. The Knights leaned on Marcus Laneaut, who had all 20 of his points in the second half, to push the lead back to eight, 49-41, with just over four minutes to play.
But behind Morris layup and then a 3-pointer with 2:06 to play, the Colts cut the lead to one.
Each team traded buckets and then Quarrie hit one of two free throws and the game was tied, 53-53, with 41 seconds left. Laneaut hit a quick jumper to give Monarch the lead, but Morris answered right back with a layup to tie it back up again, 55-55, with 23 seconds remaining.
“We preach it every day — empty the tank — leave it all out here on the floor,” added Barta. “We knew at the end of the game, somebody was going to have their heart broken . ... I prefer that it came out this way and I’m just super proud of my guys.” Regional semifinals Tuesday 7A
