Dak, Cowboys agree on new deal

-

The Cowboys and Dak Prescott finally agreed on a contract two years after negotiations first started with the star quarterback.

ESPN reported Monday night that the deal is for four years and $160 million contract, including $126 million.

Prescott’s signing bonus is $66 million, the highest in NFL history. The first three years of the deal average $42 million per year.

The agreement comes a day before a deadline to put the franchise tag on Prescott for a second straight year at a salary cap charge of $37.7 million.

Prescott, 28, played on a $31.4 million franchise tag in 2020 before his season ended with a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5.

Before the gruesome injury, the 27-yearold Prescott had started every game since the beginning of his rookie year after replacing an injured Tony Romo during the 2016 preseason.

In five seasons, Prescott has a team-record seven 400-yard passing games and 24 rushing TDs, the most by a Cowboys QB.

With a new contract, the Cowboys should get salary cap relief they’re expected to need with the cap falling from $198 million to a possibility of as low as $180 million. The cap has risen about $10 million per season for most of the last decade.

AD Bruce Rasmussen said he and university President the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson had discussions with players and their parents, former players and recruits as well as other stakeholders. Noting McDermott’s public apologies and difficult discussions with his players and others, Rasmussen said the coach has shown a willingness to learn from the mistake.
