Piers Morgan quits morning show

-

British talk show host Piers Morgan has quit the show “Good Morning Britain” after making controversial comments about the Duchess of Sussex.

The U.K.’s media watchdog said earlier Tuesday that it was launching an investigation into the show under its harm and offense rules after receiving more than 41,000 complaints about Morgan’s comments on Meghan.

In her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan spoke about how she “didn’t want to be alive anymore” as she struggled to fit in with the monarchy and that her request for help was rejected. Morgan said Monday that he “didn’t believe a word” the duchess said.

On Tuesday’s episode, Morgan stormed off the set of the program following a heated discussion with a fellow presenter about Harry and Meghan’s allegations about racism in the royal family.

ITV, which produces “Good Morning Britain,” said Tuesday: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave ‘Good Morning Britain.’ ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

‘Nomadland,’ ‘Rocks’ lead BAFTA noms:

Following an outcry over the lack of diversity in last year’s nominees and an overhaul of its rules and regulations, the EE British Film Academy Awards on Tuesday unveiled a far more inclusive field of nominees, including record nods for female directors and a leading seven nominations for Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” and Sarah Gavron’s “Rocks.”

The leading BAFTA vote-getters were Zhao’s drama and Gavron’s coming-of-age tale. Four of the six directing nominees are women, including Zhao, Gavron, Shannon

Murphy (“Babyteeth”) and Jasmila Zbanic (“Quo Vadis, Aida?”). Also nominated are Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari” and Thomas Vinterberg for “Another Round.” Nominated for best film are “Nomadland,” “The Father,” “The Mauritanian,” “Promising Young Woman” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

The BAFTAs will be held April 10 and 11.

Author Juster dies:

Norton Juster, the children’s author who fashioned a world of his own in “The Phantom Tollbooth” and went on to write “The Dot and the Line” and “Stark Naked,” has died at 91. Juster’s death was confirmed Tuesday by a spokesperson for Random House Children’s Books. Juster’s friend and fellow author Mo Willems tweeted Tuesday that Juster “ran out of stories” and died

“peacefully” the night before.

The Weeknd’s ‘Lights’ spends year in Top 10:

The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” became the first song to spend a full year in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday. That dwarfs the previous record, for Post Malone’s “Circles,” which hung in for 39 weeks. “Blinding Lights” also holds the record for the longest a song has spent in the Top 5, with 43 total weeks.
