’Canes think 4-star duo from Homestead would look good along D-line

MIAMI — The Miami Hurricanes are making a recruiting push for a pair of fourstar Homestead defensive linemen: tackle Daniel Lyons and end Dante Anderson.

With many of the same college scholarship offers, the duo could be a package deal.

“We want to go to college together,” said Anderson, who is ranked the No. 10 weakside defensive end in the 2022 recruiting class in the 247 Sports composite rankings, at the Under Armour All-America camp at Miami’s Ives Estates Park on Sunday.

“That’s my main man,” said Lyons, who is 19th among defensive tackles in those same rankings.

“If it works out like that, it works out like that, but we would like to go together. Since optimist days, 12U, 11U, we came up together. Still playing together.”

Neither one is close to making a decision or even narrowing things down, however. The recruiting dead period resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, which will last through at least May 31, has slowed down that process for them.

“It’s tough because I was planning on visiting some schools,” said Lyons, who measures in at 6-foot-4, 270 pounds. “I’m just waiting for it to open back up in June.”

Said Anderson, who is a long 6-4 and 216 pounds: “I want to visit as many places I can.”

One thing working in the Hurricanes’ favor is that Lyons has had a long-standing relationship with Miami defensive line coach Jess Simpson, who returned to UM this offseason after two seasons as Atlanta Falcons defensive line coach following his first stint with the Hurricanes in 2018.

“I knew him since my ninth-grade year when he went off,” Lyons said. “Now our bond is just building.”

Lyons says he hears from Simpson, coach Manny Diaz and recruiting director David Cooney.

“They’re great coaches, great minds,” he said. “They all talk about me, on and off the field, they want me to be great, be a man. It ain’t just about football: ‘We want you to be great, but there’s other things in life.’ ”

Anderson, whose recruitment will only be more important for Miami after the Wednesday decommitment of Chaminade-Madonna defensive end Jamaal Johnson, says the opportunity to play right away is important to him.

As for the dynamic of the two of them on the same high school defensive line, Lyons said: “We dominate. Us together is unstoppable. Me and him on the same side, you can’t run to our side.”

Assuming they can take visits in the summer, Lyons wants to make a commitment after the fall football season, possibly in November. Anderson feels he’s likely to take his decision all the way down to December’s early signing period.

Both plan on enrolling early for the 2022 spring semester.
