John Adikes Bond

-

John Adikes Bond passed away Sunday night, October 10, 2021, after a long illness. He was 66 years old.

Scion of the family that founded the Jamaica Savings Bank in Queens, New York, John was directly involved in the development of Atlantis, The Water Kingdom at Stirling Road and I-95 (which later became known as Six Flags Atlantis).

A man of many interests and skills, John was a long time member of MENSA, a real estate attorney/broker and developer, a professional poker player, published author, adjunct professor in Creative Writing, licensed Coast Guard captain and private pilot, and an owner and editor of a local newspaper. He was a graduate of the University of Miami undergraduate and law schools.

John was also a PADI Master SCUBA instruction, the culminating skill in a sport that he took up as an adolescent at Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros Island in the Bahamas, a place he returned to again and again for both work and play, and considered his “second home”.

John never did anything half way. When John wanted to learn to speak Spanish, he didn’t sign up for a class; he moved to Cuernavaca, Mexico for four months to attend a total immersion language program. When he wanted to become a professional poker player, he moved to Las Vegas for several years and played the casino poker rooms. He also edited a book on the rules of poker.

After running multiple student government campaigns in college, John took his skills into the real world, running for the Florida legislature and later for the Hollywood City Commission. He influenced (and amused) many with his expansive political missives on social media.

John left his mark wherever he went. He pushed people to be their best -- sometimes with advice, sometimes with a quick loan, sometimes even offering them housing. He encouraged and aided people in pursuing their dreams, in getting their education, and making career decisions. The number of people he helped along the way is immeasurable, and the results for many were literally life changing. He will be sorely missed.

John is survived by his wife, Jeanne Deininger, their dogs Desi and Millie, and sisters Alexis-Ann, Barbara and Marybeth and brother James, his Uncle Park T. Adikes, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, November 7th, 2021 from 3:00 to 5:30 P.M., at Ocean Alley located at 900 Broadwalk, Hollywood, Florida 33019. See Social Media to RSVP. In lieu of Flowers, please consider a charitable contribution to Broward Outreach Center, which serves the homeless of South Florida.
