Team extends Rojas for 2 years

- By Brett Shweky

The Miami Marlins and infielder Miguel Rojas have agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract extension through the 2023 season.

Entering his eighth season with the club, Rojas set single-season career highs in doubles (30), walks (36) and stolen bases (13) last season. The Venezuelan native also batted .265 with nine home runs and 48 RBI in 132 games.

“Miguel embodies a lot of the things that we want as Marlins,” Miami general manager Kim Ng said Thursday at a news conference inside Marlins Park. “On the field, the consummate professional. Defensively, extremely surehanded, a great stabilizer. In terms of leader, there’s no one who shows more leadership skills out on that field than Miguel Rojas, as well as in the clubhouse.”

Rojas has played in 730 games for the Marlins, compiling a .271 average with 32 home runs and 224 RBI. Rojas has played the ninth-most games in team history.

Rojas came to the Marlins in December 2014 as a bench player, eventually becoming the team’s everyday shortstop and clubhouse leader. He has played all four infield positions during his time with the Marlins and was deputized by manager Don Mattingly to run the club for its regular-season finales in 2019 and 2021.

“I just want to win, and I want to win here in Miami,” Rojas said Thursday.

Rojas, a Rawlings Gold Glove Award Finalist in 2020, placed second among shortstops with 80 doubles plays in 2021. He has seen action at shortstop for the Marlins in 583 games, including 292 over the past three seasons.

During last season, Rojas was the Marlins’ nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is given to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

He was also the recipient of the team’s Heart and Hustle Award — an honor for active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit, and traditions of the game.
