Parker placed on injured reserve

Dolphins say they’ll do ‘due diligence’ on adding Beckham

- By Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins oft-injured starting receiver DeVante Parker is going to be sidelined for at least three more games.

The hamstring injury that forced Parker to miss three games earlier this season flared up, resulting in him being placed on the injury list, which requires the player to miss at least three games.

According to coach Brian Flores, the former first-round pick suffered a setback during practice this week.

“Combination of soreness and from the game,” said Flores. “Probably re-aggravated [it] in practice.”

Parker’s injury, and the struggles Miami has had this season getting production from the receiver unit, could lead to the Dolphins putting in a waiver-wire claim for soonto-be released Pro Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

When asked on Friday about the possibility of acquiring the disgruntled former Browns star, who forced his way out of Cleveland because of limited opportunities since his return from season-ending knee injury, Flores said the team will do “its due diligence.”

“We check the waiver wire every day. We look at it. Go through it. Yes, expect [us] to do due diligence on any player that’s on the waiver wire,” Flores said. “We will always do what we feel is best for the organization. We’ve said that time and time again. Yes, I expect due diligence.”

According to Cleveland.com, a financial agreement is being finalized between the Browns and Beckham, and that he will be released as soon as he signs an agreement to lower the amount owed to him.

The team that claims Beckham will inherit his contract, which at this point hasn’t been clarified, especially following the adjustments being hammered out.

Under his old deal, Beckham was owed $8.05 million of his $15.75 million cap hit by the Browns.

If he clears waivers on Monday, he’ll be a free agent and allowed to sign with any team, and will

likely try to latch onto a title contender. It’s possible that his camp could discourage last-place teams from putting in a waiver-wire claim.

The Dolphins (1-7) only trail the Detroit Lions (0-8) in the waiver-wire claim order.

Beckham, who apparently had asked the Browns several times to trade him, also had a falling out with the New York Giants.

Without Parker, who has caught 25 passes for 327 yards and scored one touchdown in five games, the Dolphins will be forced to lean on rookie Jaylen Waddle, Preston Williams, who was left home for disciplinary reasons last week, and journeymen Mack Hollins, Albert Wilson and Isaiah Ford. The Dolphins have also leaning on tight end Mike Gesicki to address all the receiver issues.

Will Fuller, the Dolphins’ big-ticket free-agent addition, has only played in two games. He’s been on injured reserve since the start of October because of a broken finger, and it’s unknown when he’ll be cleared to practice. But he’s eligible to return from injured reserve.

The Dolphins have two receivers — Kirk Merritt and Travis Fulgham — on their practice squad that could be called up to the active roster for Sunday’s game. Placing Parker on injured reserve creates a roster spot on the 53-man roster.
