Flagler Palm Coast stops Somerset Academy Canyons run
The Somerset Academy Canyons girls bowling team’s aspirations of reaching the finals of the FHSAA state championship fell short against Flagler Palm Coast in the sixth round Thursday at the Broadwalk Entertainment Center in Orlando, losing 650-611 in the four-game series.
After being defeated 171-146 in the first game, Somerset Academy Canyons managed to even the series in the second game, winning 158-156. The Cougars went on to lose the remaining games 161-159 and 162-148.
The Cougars, who dropped their opening-round matchup of the state championship also against Flagler Palm Coast, 477-436, in a three-game series, orchestrated a rally in the consolation bracket, tallying four consecutive victories. Somerset Academy Canyons collected wins against Sandalwood (468-360), Cypress Creek (611-611), Timber Creek (676-617) and Rockledge (658-676).
In the next round, Bell Creek Academy defeated Flagler Palm Coast 901-799 and later would finish as the state championship runner-up to Sea Breeze, losing 1010-940 in the final round.
Somerset Academy Canyons placed 10th in the state championship qualifying stage, rolling a team four-game total of 3,051.
South Plantation, Wellington, Coral Springs Charter, Palm Beach Central and West Boca Raton failed to qualify for the girls state championship.
No boys bowling teams in either Broward or Palm Beach Counties managed to qualify for the state championship. Jupiter, West Boca Raton, Taravella, Spanish River, Archbishop McCarthy and Seminole Ridge all placed outside the qualifying cutoff.
In individual action, Somerset Academy Canyons junior Charley Korb lost to Mandarin’s Danielle Fendenheim 426-379 in the third round of the FHSAA state championship on Wednesday at the Broadwalk Entertainment Center in Orlando.
Korb, who placed 16th in qualifying, was swept by Fendenheim, losing both games, 214-197 and 212-182. Korb — the Sun Sentinel’s Palm Beach girls bowler of the year in 2019 — started the state championship with a 432-377 defeat against Oasis’ Katarina Hagler in the first round and followed by recording a 425-367 win over North Fort Myers’ Ariana Thomas.
Hagler, a sophomore and former threetime Sun Sentinel Broward girls bowler of the year, finished as the runner-up in the state championship, after being defeated by Bell Creek Academy’s Sierra Calo. Hagler, now at Oasis High School after moving to Cape Coral, had a dominant three-year span at Coral Springs Charter.
