Hurricanes stifle Rangers, looking to close out series

-

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes were playing at home in the playoffs.

The Canes scored a power-play goal and a short-handed goal.

The Canes also won a coach’s challenge, disallowing a New York Rangers goal.

That all added up to a 3-1 victory in Game 5 of the second-round playoff series at PNC Arena, keeping the Hurricanes undefeated at home in the playoffs and now one win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference finals.

The Canes will get that chance in Game 6, Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. While 7-0 at PNC Arena, the Canes are 0-5 on the road and lost their first two games to the Rangers at the Garden.

Auto racing: Lewis Hamilton can still race with his jewelry intact. The bigger problem for the Mercedes star Friday: The rough and tumble track at the Monaco Grand Prix. “It feels like my eyeballs are coming out of their sockets,” Hamilton said after a pair of practice sessions around Monaco’s downtown streets. At least he got to drive. Hamilton has been at odds with Formula One’s governing body since the FIA ruled drivers cannot compete while wearing jewelry. The seven-time F1 champion has complained he has piercings that can only be surgically removed, so the FIA granted him a waiver that gave him until Monaco to remove all his studs.

Golf: This has been a good week in North Texas for Scott Stallings, first qualifying for the U.S. Open that will be played less than an hour from where he was born and now sharing the lead at Colonial with top-ranked Scottie Scheffler and Beau Hossler. Stallings shot a 6-under 64 without a bogey on a relatively calm Friday at Hogan’s Alley. That put the Massachusetts-born and 206th-ranked player in the world at 9-under 131 along with with Dallas-area resident Scheffler and former University of Texas player Hossler.

Cycling: Dutch cyclist Koen Bouwman won the penultimate mountain stage of the Giro d’Italia on Friday.
