Florida State has signed Mike Norvell to a multiyear contract extension that keeps him with the school through the 2029 season.

Norvell, 41, completed his third season with the football program, leading the Seminoles to a 10-3 record and a No. 11 ranking in the Associated Press poll, their best showing since 2016. His record at FSU is 18-16 overall and 11-13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“Coach Norvell has reestablished a culture that the entire Seminole Family can appreciate,” said FSU athletics director Michael Alford. “We are proud of the way Coach Norvell, his staff and his team represent Florida State University on and off the field. I’m happy that we are going to continue climbing with Coach Norvell for years to come.”

“I’m grateful for the trust our administration continues to place in me to lead the Florida State football program,” Norvell said. “I’m also thankful for the people who brought me and my family here three years ago, along with the players and staff whose commitment has helped us build this foundation. The future is bright here in Tallahassee.”

Norvell signed a six-year deal when he was hired at Florida State on Dec. 7, 2019, that would have tied him to the school through Dec. 31, 2025.

It came with a starting annual salary of $3.535 million, which was to grow to $4.785 million during the final year.

According to his new contract that the Orlando Sentinel obtained through a public-records request, Norvell will make a base salary of $5.335 million in 2023 before increasing to $7.335 million in 2024, $7.585 million in 2025, $7.835 million in 2026, $8.085 million in 2027, $8.335 million in 2028 and $8.585 million in 2029.

The new contract extension bumps his annual salary to an average of $8.05 million over the remainder of the contract.

His buyout would be $6 million if he chooses to leave in 2023 before dropping to $4 million in 2024, $3 million in 2025, $2 million in 2026 and 2027, $1 million in 2028 and $0 in 2029.

Under Norvell, Florida State went from three wins in 2020 to five in 2021 and 10 in 2022.

The Seminoles saw improvement in offense, defense and special teams, finishing this season ranked No. 10 in total offense (484 yards per game) and No. 15 in total defense (322 ypg). FSU defeated in-state rivals Miami and Florida and appeared in its first bowl game since 2019, defeating Oklahoma 35-32 in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 29.
