Detention deputy charged with striking inmate in ’22

A Broward jail deputy was charged Monday with striking an inmate multiple times in 2022, according to a statement Tuesday by the sheriff ’s office.

Ke’Shondra Davis, 32, faces a charge of misdemeanor battery, to which she has pleaded not guilty.

On July 15, 2022, Davis was relocating inmates to another cell at the Broward jail in downtown Fort Lauderdale when the victim, a 38-year old man, made a comment to her, according to the statement. The sheriff ’s office did not identify the victim or specify the nature of the comment.

Davis then “confronted the inmate and struck him with her hand multiple times,” the statement said.

Following the alleged incident, Davis’ supervisor at the detention center conducted a review and forwarded it to the Broward Sheriff ’s Office Use of Force Review Board, which recommended that her actions be found not in compliance. The sheriff ’s office began an internal affairs investigation and placed Davis on restricted administrative assignment.

In November, the sheriff’s office presented the case to the State Attorney for review. On Monday, charges were filed against Davis, who was then suspended without pay.

“This case shows that our internal process works,” Sheriff Gregory Tony said in the statement Tuesday, “and we will hold our own accountable when they step out of line.”

On Sept. 10, Davis was suspended for two days for insubordination and “disrespect to a coworker” following an internal affairs investigation into an incident on June 2, according to her disciplinary record.

Davis’ arraignment has been set for March 29.
