Plowgirls rout C-City to join Lady Hornets in 20-win club
The Roscoe Plowgirls on Friday defeated Colorado City 53-20 in District 8-2A.
The Plowgirls improved to 2-1 with their victory at Colorado City (0-3) and at 20-5 overall are the second Nolan County team this season with 20 wins, joining the Highland girls who are 23-5 for the 2022-23 basketball season.
Roscoe was led in Friday’s win by Kaidy Ornelas, who had a team-high 17 points, six assists and seven steals.
Also for the Plowgirls, Carson Greenwood finished with 12 points in addition to a team-high seven rebounds.
Roscoe lost 52-32 in the District 8-2A opener for the boys at Colorado City.
Roscoe’s two teams host Winters on Tuesday. The girls winner could pull into a tie with Coleman — which is 3-0 — for the lead in District 8-2A.
Highland’s teams went to Ira on Friday, as the girls won 68-21 to go to 4-1 in District 14-1A play. The Lady Hornets’ 23 wins are five behind last year’s total. The boys lost 54-47 to Ira in their contest.
Blackwell’s teams hosted Veribest on Friday in the District 11-1A opener for the boys, who won 43-36.
Highland girls 68, Ira girls 21
Taylor Allen outscored Ira by herself with 25 points, as the Lady Hornets shut Ira down defensively. They led 15-0 after one quarter, then opened up a 32-9 advantage after two quarters and took a 39-point lead (50-11) to the fourth quarter. Jaycee Baker (14) and Easton Duniven (13) provided double-digit point support for Highland as well.
Highland’s teams go to Trent on Tuesday.
Blackwell boys 43, Veribest 36
Blackwell got district play started on the right foot, led by Karter Cummings and Matthew Shipman with 12 points. Blackwell’s next game is at Garden City on Tuesday.
