The Sweetwater girls and boys soccer teams both won for the first time Friday, the girls over Wichita Falls Hirschi in their contest 5-2 and the boys over Abilene Cooper’s JV 4-1. They will host Cooper’s JV again this Friday at 6 p.m. The girls will play here at 4:30 p.m. Friday vs. Lake Worth to start the doubleheader.

GIRLS GAME Sweetwater 5, Hirschi 2

Sweetwater got four first half goals vs. Hirschi for a 4-1 halftime lead. The first two goals were by Michaela McIntire and the third goal of the half was from Macy Newberry. The fourth goal was from Ameri Withrow to make it 4-0 before the girls would give up the first point to Wichita Falls Hirschi.

Hirschi cut it to 4-2 in the early part of the second half until Sweetwater got a final goal by Newberry.

“The girls played a great game,” coach Logan Sharp said. “We showed tons of ability and growth.”

McIntire’s first goal came on feeds from both Mary Thompson and Emma Dempsey, and Withrow got the assist to Newberry for the Lady Mustangs’ final point vs. Hirschi, which was scored on a header.

BOYS GAME Sweetwater 4, Cooper JV 1

The Mustang boys got the first goal within 30 seconds of the whistle.

The goal came when Joel Gamino took a shot that was rebounded for Jadon Reddic to put away. Later in the half Reddic got a cross from Jathan Sheridan for the Mustangs’ second point of the half, but Cooper cut the lead to 2-1 at halftime.

The Mustangs got a free kick, and Ryan Alvarez hit it past Cooper from 25 yards out to make it 3-1 in the second half.

With about six minutes left, a final goal from Javier Vasquez made it 4-1 on a cross from within the box.

“The Mustangs played well on Friday night,” said head coach Sharp.

“The boys worked hard and played as a unit. I am proud of their performance.”
