SW girls stay in 5-4A playoff hunt by beating L-View
Sweetwater collected its second District 5-4A girls win against San Angelo Lake View this year, 43-18, at Mustang Gym on Friday in a game where both teams struggled to score points the first three periods.
But slowly but surely the Lady Mustangs began to dominate, and a 15-2 fourth quarter wrapped up a win to move to 2-5 in district, to keep its postseason hopes alive. Sweetwater moved into a fourth place tie after Estacado beat Big Spring on Friday. “I’m proud of the way the girls played,” said coach Caleb Thomasson. “It was a great effort. Offensively we didn’t play great but our defense did. We are getting better. I’m proud of all eight girls. I can always depend on them to give a full effort.”
The Lady Mustangs did not allow a field goal by the Maidens, who are 0-7 in district, until the 2:13 mark of the third period against Sweetwater on a 3-pointer that cut its advantage to 14 points, 26-12. The lead fell to 12, 28-16, by the end of the quarter but Sweetwater, after allowing a Lake View goal that cut it to 28-18 to start the fourth period, didn’t allow another point. The game ended with a 15-0 run by the Lady Mustangs.
Sweetwater had lost four staight games since winning at Lake View by 30, 53-23, way back on Jan. 10. Among them was a last-second onepoint defeat Jan. 20, as the Lady Mustangs fell to the Lady Steers in a heartbreaker by a final score of 31-30 at Big Spring.
Sweetwater led 8-2 after one quarter and by 10, 17-7, at intermission in Friday’s game. Toreyna Saddler led the Lady Mustangs with 10 points. Aunisti Griffin and Hanna Vera had nine points, Marissa Garcia six, Trinity McGee four, Kendall Daniel three and Jenika Fuentes two.
