Lady Stangs now facing must-win

- BY RON HOWELL Sports Editor

SNYDER — The top three girls seeds are Levelland, Estacado and Snyder in District 5-4A with one game to play. The No. 4 and final seed will go to either Sweetwater or Big Spring, who play here Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. to end the regular season. And the Lady Mustangs must beat Big Spring Tuesday to extend the season by tying the Lady Steers for the No. 4 berth, so it will be victory or bust.

So that means it will take not one, but two Sweetwater wins this week over Big Spring to win that playoff spot. Sweetwater coach Caleb Thomasson said Saturday that the two teams have not yet decided on a venue for a second game.

Had the Lady Mustangs won on Friday at Snyder then just one win over Big Spring would be sufficient. But they lost, 53-38, to fall to 2-7 in District 5-4A and drop from a tie with now 3-6 Big Spring, which took over fourth place alone Friday following a 48-24 win over San Angelo Lake View.

Sweetwater led Snyder just once, 3-2 in the first quarter. But it kept the Lady Tigers (6-3) in sight until the host team’s 16-3 run the fourth quarter after Sweetwater got within 35-29 on a Toreyna Saddler layup. The scoring damage mostly came from Aaliyah Braziel, who scored 13 of her 26 points during the run to open up a 19-point lead.

Sweetwater (13-19 overall) was led in scoring by Saddler, who finished with 11 points, and Aunisti Griffin, who scored 10 points.

Roscoe girls tied for first after defeating Winters to create 8-2A logjam

The Roscoe girls have a path to a second straight District 8-2A title after the Plowgirls’ road win over Winters, 59-27, on Friday. The victory and a 33-28 Coleman victory at Miles leaves Roscoe, Coleman and Miles all at 7-2. The three teams have all played each other twice so they could finish in a three-way tie when the regular season wraps up on Tuesday. Roscoe will host Bangs (3-6) in its district finale.

The Plowgirls led Winters 25-1 after one quarter in defeating the Lady Blizzards, who dropped to 2-7 in District 8-2A after Friday’s defeat. Carson Greenwood had 15 points, Cameron Greenwood 14, Zoey Welch 11, Kaidy Ornelas nine, Mia Lavalais four, Yaniez Aguilar three and Kirsten Welch two.

Roscoe has gone 4-0 at home and 3-2 on the road in district this year. The Plowgirls lost at Coleman 53-46 to start District 8-2A but won the rematch 41-24. Roscoe lost a 41-36 decision at Miles after getting a 41-30 home win the first meeting.
