Area teams advance; Mustangs win

- BY RON HOWELL Sports Editor

Just as they did last year, the Roscoe and Highland girls basketball teams are moving on to the second round of the high school girls basketball playoffs following Tuesday’s wins over their bi-district opponents.

In Class 2A, Roscoe took a 35-29 win over Water Valley and Highland enjoyed a big 57-22 victory in its Class 1A contest against May.

Roscoe will get a rematch with Sundown, which last year ended the Plowgirls’ 2022 season in the second round. The teams will play in Post at 8 p.m. Friday.

Cameron Greenwood led Roscoe with 16 points and Carson Greenwood had 10 vs. Water Valley. Roscoe led 23-11 at the half, then held off an 18-12 surge by Water Valley in the second half.

Highland had little trouble with May, leading 16-2 after one period, 28-13 after two and 47-19 entering the fourth period.

The Lady Hornets got a team-high 20 points from Layla Herrera. Two other players, Taylor Allen (15) and Easton Duniven (12) also reached double figures. Highland will now take on Roby in Colorado City with tipoff at 6 p.m. Friday.

Mustangs defeat Lake View, now await Glen Rose

Sweetwater, the No. 4 boys seed in 5-4A, led Lake

View by just 16-13 after one period Tuesday but pulled away after that en route to a 61-45 win to end the regular season. The Mustangs play Glen Rose at 6 p.m. Monday in Cisco. Malik Brown’s 22 points led Sweetwater while Damarrius Walker had 13.

The Mustangs finished 5-5 in District 5-4A and are now 22-11 overall, winning five of their last six games after an 0-4 district start.

Glen Rose is the No. 1 seed in District 6-4A.

Roscoe boys headed to Class 2A playoffs

Roscoe’s boys will be the No. 4 team in District 8-2A and play Reagan County in bi-district early next week in spite of Tuesday’s 70-40 loss to Miles to end the regular season.

The Plowboys, who finished 4-6 in District 8-2A, got 16 points from Jace Arnwine while Parker Gleaton added 15 against Miles. Reagan County is the No. 1 seed in District 7-2A.
