Mustangs blanked in opener; Lady Stangs outscore Jim Ned

-

CLYDE — An eight-run first catapulted Clyde to a 10-0 win over Sweetwater as the two baseball teams began their season Monday.

Sweetwater’s only hit was a Cali Mendez single in the game, which ended on the mercy rule after 4 1/2 innings. Sweetwater had five errors and also surrendered seven walks to Clyde, which had just four hits Monday, but had several players out still playing basketball.

Sweetwater will be at the Brown County tournament in Bangs next, starting on Thursday, and then host its own tournament next week.

The Mustangs will take on Brownwood on Thursday followed by Eastland Friday and Perryton on Saturday to end the three-day event.

TUSCOLA — Ahead from the start, Sweetwater still needed every run in a 15-14 softball victory at Jim Ned on Tuesday.

Sweetwater had nine runs after two innings and 11 after three frames against its Class 3A opponent, then added four more runs to barely survive a final rally by Jim Ned and improve its season mark to 5-2.

Sweetwater finished with 14 hits including six for extra bases. Kendall Daniel went 4-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, five RBIs and four runs scored, and Mabry Weaver homered with three RBIs. Hanna Vera also had three RBIs, and she and Shelby Dent doubled for Sweetwater’s other extra base hits in the game.

Marissa Garcia had two RBIs and Dent and Mikayla Ashley one, while Weaver and Rebecca Castillo scored three runs, Ashley and Bethanee Rodriguez two and Dent one.

Weaver, Ashley, Vera and Castillo had two hits and Dent and Garcia one.

The Lady Mustangs also drew 12 walks, including three by Castillo and two by Ashley, Rodriguez and Kaitlin Vera.

Ashley pitched the first four innings and was credited with the victory, with Castillo working the last three innings.

Sweetwater stretched its lead to 15-9 in the top of the sixth on a three-run homer by Daniel after Rodriguez walked and Castillo singled. But Jim Ned came up with five runs in the bottom of the inning on consecutive inside the park homers, one with the bases loaded.

However, Castillo threw a scoreless seventh, despite giving up a pair of Jim Ned singles to preserve a narrow Sweetwater victory.
