-

Sweetwater High School’s girls soccer team set at least three records and extended another in an 11-0 win over Pecos at Mustang Bowl in the Lady Mustangs’ final home match of the 2023 season on Friday.

Sweetwater. who also ended a four-game losing streak, plays at Andrews at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to end its season.

Sweetwater’s 11 goals and 11-goal victory margin and Macy Newbery’s five individual goals all set new marks for a Sweetwater team (6-8-1 overall) that despite missing the playoffs has won more games than any Lady Mustang team in the four years that Sweetwater has had a UIL-sanctioned soccer program.

With Friday’s win, Sweetwater is 4-6-1 in District 2-4A play which is also a new Sweetwater record for district wins. Sweetwater’s girls soccer team had previously set one-game records in an 8-0 win at Pecos in February for most goals, victory margin and individual goals — four, which were scored by Mary Thompson.

Ameri Withrow had three goals, KK McEntire two and Avery Biera one when the two teams met again Friday at Mustang Bowl. In February, Newberry scored two goals and Withrow and McEntire one in the first match at Pecos.

Coach Logan Sharp had praise for his team’s Senior Night win Friday.

“I am proud of their effort and dedication. The girls played hard and left it all in the Bowl,” he said.

Before Friday, the Lady Mustangs had last won 4-2 against Andrews on Feb. 17.

Pecos edges past Sweetwater boys

Sweetwater lost to Pecos by a score of 1-0 in boys district soccer action Friday at the Mustang Bowl to fall to 0-10-1 in district action.

Despite the loss, Sharp said the Mustangs, who play at Andrews Tuesday at 7 p.m. to end the season, did well against Pecos. “The (final) score does not match their effort,” he said. “(We) dominated the majority of the game. They fought hard but came up just short against Pecos.”
