Lady Stangs end best season by beating Andrews

-

A 2-0 win at Andrews for Sweetwater’s girls Tuesday completed the best soccer season for the Lady Mustangs’ program in the four years since soccer became a UIL sport. The boys lost in their finale at Andrews 4-0.

Mary Thompson scored the girls’ first goal vs. Andrews off a cross from Ameri Withrow and KK McEntire scored the second goal.

Also, goalie Avery Biera made a big save in the first half. McEntire scored at the top of the box as she beat her defender down the side and placed it over the keeper’s head for the second goal.

The Lady Mustangs, who were 7-8-1 overall and 5-6-1 in district play, won their last two matches by shutout over Pecos and Andrews.

In the 11-0 win over Pecos Sweetwater set a one-game mark for the most goals.

Also, the five goals scored by Macy Newberry against Pecos set a Sweetwater onegame mark for most goals scored by a player.

On Tuesday, the Mustang boys trailed 3-0 at the half but held Andrews to a single goal the second half and three players — Jathan Sheridan, Cali Mendez and Joseph Pena — came close to making a goal. “The game was closer than the score depicts,” coach Logan Sharp said. “I am proud of the boys’ effort and dedication.”

Sweetwater softball defeated at Lamesa

On Wednesday, Sweetwater went to No. 11 Lamesa and lost, 9-0, in its final non-district softball game.
