Roscoe: 5-5

- BY RON HOWELL Sports Editor

Roscoe was riding high early after a solid 2-0 start, until a rash of injuries led to an uneven .500 season for coach Jake Freeman’s Plowboys.

Roscoe, which was coming off a 10-2 season that was its best in 13 years, did make it back to the playoffs.

The Plowboys won the No. 3 seed in their district (6-2A, D-II) by edging Hamlin, 16-14, to end the regular season. Parker Gleaton ran in the go-ahead touchdown and added a two-point PAT run to give Roscoe its margin of victory after a late Hamlin safety.

Roscoe had a very upand-down year. The Plowboys beat Colorado City (46-18) and Sterling City (58-18) to begin the 2023 season, but then lost big to excellent teams from New Home and Sunray to end non-district play. A game vs. Midland TLCA was also cancelled at the last minute the week after the Plowboys had a Week 2 open date, so the team went three weeks between its season opener and its second game.

After two blowout losses dropped the team to 2-2, Roscoe opened district play with a 28-6 home win over Cross Plains, and followed it with a big 64-12 victory over Abilene TLCA, before losing big to Albany — the eventual Class 2A, Division II state champs — and Miles prior to its district finale with Hamlin.

Roscoe then faced a good McCamey team in the bidistrict playoffs and lost to the Badgers 42-6 to end the Plowboys’ season.

Gleaton was the only first team all-district player for Roscoe, as a tight end and defensive end. Diego Vela (offensive tackle), Richie Solis (linebacker), Peyton Friedman (defensive tackle) and Lupe Leanos (wide receiver) made the second team, and five other players for Roscoe received all-district honorable mention.
