BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH

Thank You Notes

I was watching an interview last week with Jack Nicklaus, the world-famous golfer. It was an all access interview that spanned a variety of subjects. He answered questions about his philanthropy work, his family, his playing career, Tiger Woods, and the “state of the game.” As a long time contributor to golf, and a decades long caretaker of the game, it was a good listen.

One of the things that caught my ear was a bit surprising. He said that in hosting his annual Professional Golf Tournament, “the Memorial,” he was surprised to find out that the tournament’s sponsors ever only receive a handful of “thank you notes” from the players. Please understand, the tournament sponsors are the ones who put up the majority of the multimillion dollar purse they play for each year. A sign of the time? Perhaps.

He went on to say that he had begun this habit years earlier at the prompting of Arnold Palmer. “It only takes a few minutes,” Palmer told Nicklaus (when he was a young man), and it means the world to those who make it possible to play the game we love.

I was struck by the thought, “It only takes a few minutes.” It is so true! It only takes a few minutes, sometimes even a few seconds, to be polite, do the right thing, or write a short note of encouragement. A lost art? Maybe. Is it something that should return? Absolutely.

I believe we have the Bible as instruction for showing thankfulness. On several occasions we are told to be thankful. Famously, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In EVERYTHING give THANKS, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” How about that? Let me encourage you (and me) to take a few minutes and write a thank you note to someone who has done something for you, inspired you, or made an impact on you this week.

We will welcome Dr. Bob Ellis this Sunday morning as he leads our Annual Summit Series titled “Genesis 1-11: The Beginning of Everything” for the next two Sundays. He will teach a combined Sunday Morning Class in the Fellowship Hall at 9:15am each week.

It’s not too late to start! This year our church is reading through the Old Testament. If you would like to join us, there are reading guides available in the foyer.

KidX and Youth is back in action on Wednesdays at 6:00pm. From Kindergarten to High School, we have a place for you! Join us on the third floor for Bible Study, food, and games...it promises to be the best night of your week!

After postponing Men’s Prayer Breakfast due to the weather, we’re going to meet this Tuesday morning. Come for a morning of fellowship, a brief devotional, and a delicious breakfast. We’ll meet in the Fellowship Hall at 6:30am, so make sure to mark your calendar. We will be studying the Prophets (Amos, Joel and Jonah), so grab a copy of the study guide in the Foyer.

Beginning February 4, we will be offering Financial Peace, a nine week class where church members will learn to:

• Take control of their money

• Attack debt with a vengeance and pay it off

• Save for emergencies

• Choose the right insurance plans

• Invest wisely and build wealth

• Give generously

*There is a ten member limit for this class. You may sign-up at the Information Table in the foyer.

Vision Meal-January 28

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming FBC Vision Meal, where we will be discussing the future direction of our church. Come join us in the Fellowship Hall from 5:30-7:00pm and bring your favorite soup and/or sandwiches to share.

Is there anything better than the genuine enthusiasm of children singing praises to the Lord? Be here on February 4 when our children will be leading during Worship!

Our lives are constantly filled with noise and distraction. Between all the notifications on our phones, noise in the background, or the thoughts in our own heads it seems like we never get to enjoy true peace.

Why not take an hour on Sunday, unplug, put the phone on do not disturb, quiet the distractions and spend some time with Jesus.

Church on Sunday brings the sense of peace we’ve longed for all week.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.

We meet for worship Sundays at 10:40 AM. 513 Lamar Street. Child care and kids activities are available. Come find peace and rest.

If you’re looking for hope, community, and a deeper relationship with Jesus? Join us on Wednesdays at 6PM for dinner and Bible study. We have activities for the whole family.

The seasons are changing and change can be a good thing, especially if you are changing for the good. Change you say, no way not me.

Most of us don’t like change but change can be good if it is positive steps forward.

Many are stuck in discouraging and dead cycles. I believe that Jesus still wants to rescue everyone out of them.

I can say from my own personal experience that Jesus makes everything new and he also refreshes our souls. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

So if you are stuck in discouraging cycle I would encourage you to cry out to Jesus for help. Ask him to show you new things to do for him. I believe you will feel a new well and a freshness as Jesus beings to make things new in your life. May the love, joy, and peace of God be in your life today and everyday as you learn to trust him more.
