Mustangs still 2nd in 5-4A after road win

BIG SPRING — The No. 3 playoff berth for Sweetwater is now a strong possibilit­y after Tuesday’s win at Big Spring, 38-34, to wrap up the regular season.

Sweetwater trailed 33-30 over halfway through the final quarter vs. Big Spring before ending on an 8-1 run.

The Lady Mustangs’ run was led by Lauren Biera, who had five of her 11 points over the final 2:52.

Sweetwater (18-12 overall, 5-5 district) on Friday is at Hermleigh for a tiebreaker with Snyder to decide the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds out of District 5-4A, with the tipoff set for 4 p.m., in the third meeting between the teams.

Lady Mustangs a 35-34 lead with 1:14 left, and one free throw by Braelyn Gaytan and two by Kaidynce Tilley clinched the win for Sweetwater. At the same time, Snyder fell to 5-5 in District 5-4A by losing its game to Estacado 65-38.

The No. 4 seed faces No. 1-ranked Glen Rose in bidistrict. The No. 3 seed gets Stephenvil­le, the No. 2 team in 6-4A. The playoff will be

BIG SPRING — Sweetwater (6-2, 17-12) held onto its one-game lead over Levelland (5-3) by defeating Big Spring, which fell to 1-7 in District 5-4A.

The Mustangs are at firstplace Estacado (8-0) on Friday, then entertain 2-6 Lake View to end the regular season on Tuesday before they start the playoffs.

Stason Hernandez had 20 points to lead the win over Big Spring, while Jadyn Forbes had 13 points for Sweetwater and Caiden Smith 10. Hernandez connected on six 3-pointers, four of them in the fourth quarter. Smith and Darwin Blueford had two 3s and Forbes and Korda Moore one. Sweetwater led by only 23-20 at halftime.
