Davies lifts Lancers to OT win, NCAA berth

LOCAL COLLEGES Men’s basketball

Worcester State 80, Bridgewate­r State 79: St. John’s High graduate Sam Davies (11 points) nailed a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left in regulation to tie, then converted a layup with 1 second to play in overtime as the host Lancers (18-9) won their fifth game in a row, their second straight MASCAC Tournament championsh­ip and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division 3 Tournament.

Ryan Rubenskas had 22 points with 12 rebounds, Brandon Goris added 19 points and Aaron Nkrumah 15 for Worcester State

Top-seeded Worcester State and No. 2 Bridgewate­r State (14-12) split their regular-season series, with the Lancers winning the MASCAC regular-season race by only a game, and it took a backand-forth extra period to determine a champion.

Babson 73, Clark 64: Bruce Saintilius scored 20 points before fouling out for the host Cougars (20-7) in a loss to the fourth-seeded Beavers (14-13) for the NEWMAC title and automatic berth to the NCAA Division 2 Tournament. Clark and NEWMAC regular-season champion WPI will wait to see if either or both receive an at-large berth.

Southern New Hampshire 91, Assumption 69: Kasey Draper had 17 points and Kani Glover 16 points and three steals for the visiting Greyhounds (14-13, 10-11 Northeast-10), who fell behind the Penmen (16-10, 12-9) by 20 points entering intermissi­on.

Women’s basketball

Holy Cross 71, Navy 63: Janelle Allen netted 20 points, and three teammates also scored in double figures as the host Crusaders (16-10, 10-5) turned back the Mids (10-16, 6-9) to maintain their onegame lead in the Patriot League. HC’s

Bronagh Power-Cassidy scored 17 points, Cara McCormack had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Kaitlyn Flanagan added 11 points.

Assumption 78, Southern New Hampshire 65: Marina Callahan scored a career-high 29 points with seven rebounds and three blocked shots to power the 16th-ranked Greyhounds (22-4, 17-4 Northeast-10) past SHNU (17-8, 15-6) in Manchester, New Hampshire. Assumption’s Amanda Mieczkowsk­i had 15 points and seven assists, and Kaijhe Hall added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Men’s hockey

Fitchburg State 2, UMass-Dartmouth 1: Michael Macchioni’s goal at 8:40 of overtime lifted the host Falcons (15-9-2) past the Corsairs (16-11) in a MASCAC semifinal at the Wallace Civic Center. Hunter Dunn scored in the first period for Fitchburg State, which faces top-seeded Plymouth State in Saturday’s final. The Falcons’ Frederick Soderberg had 36 saves.

Assumption 7, St. Anselm 5: Ronny Paragallo had four assists on a night there were seven goal-scorers for the top-seeded Greyhounds (24-7), who used a five-goal barrage in the third period to outlast the No. 5 Hawks (10-18) in a Northeast-10 semifinal at the Worcester Ice Center. Assumption hosts thirdseede­d Southern New Hampshire in the final next Saturday.

Women’s hockey

Stonehill 3, Assumption Ava McGaffigan’s second-period goal brought the Greyhounds (10-22-4) to within one, but the Skyhawks (19-15-2) potted the empty-netter to secure their NEWHA quarterfin­al series sweep in Bridgewate­r, concluding Assumption’s inaugural varsity season.

Maine 5, Holy Cross 2: Madison Michals and Taylor Cantelon scored to give the host Crusaders (7-23-3, 4-20-3 Hockey 1:

East) a two-goal lead, but the Black Bears (15-17-2, 11-14-2) tallied the next five unanswered to secure a weekend series sweep.

Baseball

Holy Cross 13, Kansas State 10: Sean Scanlon hit a three-run homer in a fourrun 10th inning for the Crusaders (2-3) against the 24th-ranked Wildcats (3-3) in Manhattan, Kansas. Jake McElroy’s three-run homer highlighte­d a five-run first inning for HC. Chris Baillargeo­n was 3 for 5 with a double and RBI for Holy Cross.

Men’s lacrosse

Nichols 7, Coast Guard 6: Colby Gillis scored with 1 second left in the first overtime to left the visiting Bison (2-0) past the Bears (0-2). Conor Doherty and Blake Covell each scored twice for Nichols.

Clark 15, Mass. Maritime 13: Matt Wells scored four goals with an assist, and Matthew Minkwitz and Colin Howard each added three goals and an assist as the host Cougars (2-1) held off the Buccaneers (1-1).

Dartmouth 14, Holy Cross 8: Tyler Marmo scored twice for the Crusaders (2-2), who fell behind in the first quarter, 5-0, to the Big Green (1-1) in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Women’s lacrosse

Holy Cross 18, New Hampshire 7: Ella Kittredge connetced for four goals, and Sally Zinsner (2 assists) and Lauren Drillock scored three as the Crusaders (2-2) rolled at Durham, New Hampshire. HC outscored UNH in the second quarter, 9-0, netting 10 consecutiv­e goals for a 14-4 halftime lead.

Nichols 14, Colby-Sawyer 11: Hadley Houghton poured in six goals with two assists, and Emma Patton and McKenzie Muir each netted three as the host Bison prevailed in their opener against the

Chargers (0-2).

Wheaton 14, Worcester State 13: Hannah Erickson had three goals and an assist, and Meghan Bowen, Shea Jarvis, Madigan Kelley and Molly Witkowski each scored twice for the visiting Lancers in a season-opening, double-overtime loss to the Lyons (2-0).

HIGH SCHOOLS Wrestling

All-State Championsh­ips: Monty Tech’s Jonah Paulino posted a 10-3 victory over Bridgewate­r-Raynham’s Brent Von Magnus to repeat as All-State champion at 132 pounds at Salem High School. Paulino, a four-time divisional state champion, advanced to the final by fall over Agawam’s Nicholas Ugolino.

Shepherd Hill’s Sawyer Ayotte also captured an All-State title, with a 9-6 decision over Sharon’s Cyrus Jones in the 150-pound final. He gained the title match with a 3-2 win over Hanover’s Anthony Mann, 3-2, in the semis.

After losing in the round of 16 at 285 pounds, Leominster’s Anthuan LinoDiego worked his way through the consolatio­n bracket and outpointed Arlington’s Brady Dekkenhuis, 2-1, to capture third place.

St. John’s Landan Gray and Leominster’s Dan Greaney placed fourth and fifth at 144 points. Greaney lost in a semifinal to Shawsheen’s eventual champion James Tildsley, then Gray defeated Greaney by fall in a consolatio­n semifinal. Greaney outpointed Canton’s Max Kupferman, 4-2, in the fifth-place match.

Monty Tech’s Cooper Wiebe finished sixth at 126, and Nashoba’s Daniel De Almeida was sixth at 175.

Boys’ basketball

Worcester Academy 60, Tabor 58: Payton Kamin scored 18 points, and Cam Hailey and Ryan Sullivan each added to to lift the visiting Hilltopper­s (14-16) in their regular-season finale.
