Crusader skaters rally past Canisius to take Game 1

LOCAL COLLEGES Men’s hockey Atlantic Hockey Tournament

Holy Cross 4, Canisius 3: Liam McLinskey and Jack Stockfish scored just over minute apart midway through the third period as the second-seeded Crusaders (19-12-4) rallied past the Golden Griffins (12-20-4) in Game 1 of a best-of-three Atlantic Hockey quarterfin­al at the Hart Center.

The series is a postseason rematch of last year’s championsh­ip game, won by Canisius.

Jack Ricketts and Matt Shatsky also tallied for Holy Cross, which maintained a wide advantage of shots on goal throughout the game. Canisius’ David Fessenden had 42 saves, and HC’s Jason Grande turned aside 25 shots.

Holy Cross would advance to a bestof-three semifinal with a victory Saturday, and as second seed would host the series. A Canisius win Saturday would force a deciding Game 3 at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hart Center.

Baseball

Assumption 4, Wilmington (Del.) 3; California (Pa.) 11, Assumption 7: Former Worcester Academy star Jamison Howland (2 for 3) delivered a two-run triple in the fourth inning to give the Greyhounds (3-5) a 4-0 lead, and they hung on in their first game of the day at Lake Worth Beach, Florida. Owen Podolec and Sean Moynihan also had two hits each, and winning pitcher Kyle Keating allowed only one earned run and one hit in six innings against the Wildcats (7-3), striking out five.

In the night game, Jack Barry went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, and Moynihan, Matthew Holbrook (2 RBIs) and Christophe­r Rabias each had two hits.

Clark 12, Gordon 1: Carter Doran (3 for 4, 4 runs, 4 RBIs) delivered a threerun homer in the seventh inning, delivering a mercy victory for the Cougars (7-0) in Davenport, Florida. Michael Soares went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Dom Mariani (3 for 4) also scored four runs.

WPI 3, Westminste­r (Pa.) 2: Zachary Roethlein (2 for 5) scored twice for the Engineers (7-0), who scratched in two runs in the eighth inning, then held on in the ninth against the Titans (4-4) at Ebbets Field in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, concluding WPI’s southern swing.

Cal-Riverside 7, Holy Cross 4: Chris Baillargeo­n (3 for 4) hit a two-run homer to center field in the first inning and an RBI single in the ninth, but the Crusaders (3-8) were hampered by eight errors leading to three unearned runs in the first of a four-game series against the host Highlander­s (7-6).

Elms 16, Fitchburg State 5; Elms 12, Fitchburg State 8: Also in Davenport, Jacob Hurrell (2 for 3, 3 RBIs) homered twice in the nightcap, but the Falcons (2-3) were swept by the Blazers (7-3). Hurrell also went 2 for 3 in the first game, as did Joseph Abt.

Penn State-Abington 5, Anna Maria 3: Matt Beuka’s two-run double in the seventh inning tied the game for the AmCats (2-4), but the Lions (3-6) scored two in the top of the eighth in Auburndale, Florida.

Softball

Clark 8, North Central (Minn.) 0; Clark 9, Baruch 0: In the first game, Megan Dube fired a five-inning no-hitter, striking out seven for the Cougars (4-6) in Fort Myers, Florida. Rebecca Mauro was 3 for three with two runs and two RBIs, in the opener and Emelie Spence also drove in two runs.

Holy Cross 5, Northern Illinois 3; Montana 12, Holy Cross 7: Jenna Alesandrel­li’s second hit of the opener was a sixth-inning home run to provide insurance for the Crusaders at the Montana Softball Classic in Missoula. Callie Thibault was 2 for 3 with an RBI double. Jessica Mott led off the second game with a home run for HC (4-8), and Anna

Brait was 3 for 4 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Randolph-Macon 6, WPI 1; WPI 5, Randolph-Macon 5: Callie Allison (2 for 3, 3 RBIs) drove in two runs with a sixthinnin­g single in the second game, and pinch hitter Kallie Case’s RBI single tied the game in the seventh for the visiting Engineers (0-3-1). Emma Nagy homered in the seventh inning of the nightcap, but the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets (30-1) prevailed.

Track & field

NCAA Division 3 Championsh­ips: WPI’s distance medley relay team of Amelia Kokernak, Isabel Hallal, Elise Deshusses and Grace Hadley won the the event in 11:34.53, in the first day of competitio­n in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Hadley ran 4:40.16 in her 1,600-meter leg to secure the victory, capping her impressive day. Earlier, she won her preliminar­y heat in the mile, in 4:51.44 to advance to Saturday’s final.

WPI’s Gavin Fleck twice broke the school pole vault record, with his best 16 feet, 4 inches, en route to placing seventh, garnering All-America honors.

Men’s volleyball

Nichols 3, Emerson 0: Dylan Knapp had 10 kills and Carlos Mercado 19 assists as the host Bison (17-4) swept past the Lions (3-11). Set scores were 25-16, 25-11, 25-20.

Men’s lacrosse

Wentworth 17, Clark 6: Patrick Liddy scored twice for the Cougars (2-4) in a loss to the Leopards (4-2) in Clearwater, Florida.

Men’s tennis

Mercyhurst 6, Assumption 1: At Hilton Head, the Greyhounds (5-10) took one doubles match in a loss to the Lakers (7-1).

HIGH SCHOOLS Boys basketball

MIAA state tournament Division 4 quarterfin­al

Bourne 71, David Prouty 46: Jayden Rubio netted 19 points, and Alec Fournier had 16 for the visiting Panthers 19-4), the 10th seed, in a loss to the No. 2 Canalmen (22-1).

Division 5 quarterfin­al

Hoosac Valley 59, Hopedale 48: Patrick Madden scored 22 points, and Robbie Manning added 12 for the eighthseed­ed Blue Raiders (12-11) in a round of eight loss in Adams.

Girls basketball

MIAA state tournament Division 4 quarterfin­als

Millis 42, Littleton 38: A 18-13 second quarter was the difference as the fourth-seeded Mohawks (18-7) edged the fifth-seeded Tigers (17-6) in the round of eight. Rebecca Fusco netted a team-high 12 points for Littleton, which led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Cathedral 74, Millbury 56: Ashleigh Lagor totaled 24 points and Caylee Wilbur chipped in 10 for the No. 9 Woolies (15-8) in the round of eight in Boston.

Track & field

Nike Indoor Nationals: The Worcester Tech sprint medley relay team of Michael Gyimah, Christian Agyekum, Cyprian Ojatabu and Imani Githure broke the boys’ school record, finishing the 1,600-meter event in 3:42.70 at the Armory in New York. The Eagles foursome placed 16th in the championsh­ip event, out of the second heat.

Groton-Dunstable’s Georgia Brooks finished 12th in the girls’ emerging elite 2 mile in 11:09.93.

New Balance Indoor Nationals: Ayer-Shirley’s sprint medley relay foursome of Danae Arnold, James Churchill, Arthur Ribeiro and Jacob Teo crossed in 3:38.48 to place 28th in the boys’ championsh­ip division in Boston.
