McElroy’s grand slam lifts Crusaders

LOCAL COLLEGES Baseball

Holy Cross 9, Cal Riverside 6: Jake McElroy belted a grand slam, and Cam Bryant had two hits and John LaFleur doubled, drove in a run and scored as the visiting Crusaders (4-10) wrapped up an eight-game western trip by holding off the Highlander­s (9-7).

Lynn 12, Assumption 5: Cole Fowler doubled and hit his second homer of the season, but the visiting Greyhounds (3-8) were topped by the No. 22 Fighting Knights (13-9) to wrap up their Florida swing in Boca Raton.

Softball

WPI 13, North Carolina Wesleyan 5: Emma Nagy, Callie Allison and Meg Sherwood all had three hits as the visiting Engineers (1-3-1) recorded a season high in runs while wrapping up their southern trip against the Batting Bishops (6-4) in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. WPI's Sydney Russell recorded five stolen bases in the game.

The teams started a second game, which was suspended by curfew and won't be completed.

UMass-Dartmouth 15, Nichols 7: Ava Slavinsky and Chloe Steiniger (double, RBI) each had two hits, and Erin Gour homered and drove in two runs to lead the Bison in their season opener, but the Corsairs (1-2) scored six runs in the fifth inning to earn the win in Clermont, Florida.

Emily Iannuccili also had two RBIs for Nichols.

Nichols 3, Ithaca 0: Chelsea Indyk struck out seven and scattered six hits over 6.2 innings to earn the win for the Bison (1-1), while Erin Gour went 2 for 3 with a two-run double to right center and Lilly Fangel drove in a run to spark a three-run second inning to lead Nichols at the Spring Games at Clermont, Fla.

Fitchburg State 9, Cornell (Iowa) 6; Cornell (Iowa) 8, Fitchburg State 6: Senior Molly Grass was 2 for 3 with a double, run and two RBIs, while classmate Dana Cisowski singled and drove in two as the Falcons opened the season with a win in the first game of a doublehead­er against the Rams (1-1) at Viera, Florida.

Cisowski had two hits and drove in three runs in the nightcap, while freshman Jessica Mueller singled and doubled.

Men’s lacrosse

Alfred 6, Nichols 5: The Saxons (4-0) scored twice in the fourth quarter and held off a rally to earn the win over the Bison (3-2) at Hartford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland.

Sophomore Connor Doherty scored twice to lead Nichols, giving him a teamhigh seven goals on the season.

Women’s lacrosse

West Chester 16, Assumption 5: Olivia Catanzarit­e scored twice, and Jenna Joseph had a goal and two assists as the host Greyhounds (2-1) were topped by the third-ranked Golden Bears (3-0).
