High school football previews,

-

KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m., Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Texas High had open date after losing the prior week to Evangel. Tyler Lee was blanked by arch-rival John Tyler, 21-0.

LAST YEAR: Teams did not play.

GAME FACTS: The two teams have not played since 1999, the Red Raiders winning in Barry Norton’s first season as head coach at Texas High. Darrell Piske took over the Tyler Lee program last February, moving from Class 3A Fairfield. Lee opened the season with a 35-34 overtime loss to another District 14-4A team, Sulphur Springs. Tickets are $6 at the gate, and Tiger fans attending will be charged a $2 parking fee due to the ongoing East Texas State Fair surrounding the stadium. COACH’S COMMENTS: Texas High’s Norton: “We’ve tried to put the Evangel game behind us. We realize we ran into a football team that was better than us. You just take the lessons you learn from it, try to improve and make it better.

“Tyler Lee is a completely different type football team than Evangel. They’re a run-oriented team that likes to get in the I formation and run their tailback 35 times a game. They get in

different sets, but they want to run the football, and their tailback (Laquintas Wallace) is a good one.

“Defensively, they run out of a 3-4, and their line is their strength. They like to slant and stunt, and we have to make the numbers work in our favor. We have to eliminate the negative play. If we do that and be more balanced, I think we can move the football.”

TYLER LEE’S PISKE: “Our defense played well against John Tyler, giving up just two scores. Our offense was good the first two games, but not so much last week. We’re just trying to fix the mistakes we’ve been making and trying to get our offense and defense working at the same time.

“We want to run the football. That’s what they’ve always done around here. We could also like to throw it more, and we did that in our first two games.

“Texas High presents quite a challenge for us. Besides tradition, they always have good athletes. Defensively, I don’t know if we can block 99 (Jonathan Hunt), and their secondary runs really well. They also have a lot of speed on offense. We’re going to have to be ready to play.”
