Motown is back

Revue will feature a costume contest and local talent

- By Aaron Brand

Feel the great, soulful grooves of Motown on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Texarkana Country Club with Motown Revue II.

Presented by Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council’s African-American Committee, Motown Revue II starts at 7 p.m. and features the talents of singer David Michael, a Texarkana native who recently went far on the reality TV series “Sunday Best.”

For Motown Revue II, get ready for a night of music to love, dancing to do and food to enjoy. “All Motown, all night,” said Genia Bullock, chair of TAAC.

“You want to wear your costume,” Bullock advised. “Dress as your favorite Motown celebrity or dress in your favorite ’70s costume, because we will have a costume contest.”

The event follows a successful Motown Revue staged by TAAC two years ago. That event packed Regional Arts Center’s Cabe Hall with dancing and good times; Bullock recalls it as “standing room only.”

“We had such positive feedback, and people were asking when we were going to have our next one,” she said. That time is a week from Saturday.

About the performer for the night, Bullock sees a lot to enjoy with David Michael.

“He has a unique sound,” she said. “He’s a well-known local favorite who’s coming back to Texarkana. He participated in our first Motown Revue and brought a lot of energy to the event.”

TAAC is looking forward to having him return, this time as the featured performer.

TAAC’s aim is to raise awareness about African-American culture and contributions to the world, which they strive to do through the group’s programs.

“Our objective is to entertain, educate and empower our community,” Bullock said. “We do this through our annual projects.”

Celebrity co-hosts for the night’s festivities are Warren Smith III and Kristi Brown, two people who’ve participated in TRAHC’s reader’s theater program.

Though there’s no word yet on which celebrities they’ll be dressed as, there will be a Soul Train scramble board and a Soul Train line at the party.

“It’s just going to be a night of fun Motown music,” Bullock said.
