Trinity girls cruise past Nevada, 16-6

- By Bob Krayl

A time limit would have been nice in Trinity Christian’s 16-6 nondistrict victory over Nevada here Tuesday evening at Lady Warrior Field.

Nevada pitchers issued seven walks, hit five batters, gave up nine hits, and the team committed nine errors in the game that ended in the sixth inning by the 10-run rule that lasted almost 2 hours, 20 minutes.

Trinity jumped on Nevada starting pitcher Lorayna Gonzalez for six runs on three hits in the first inning, which was more that the Warriors scored the night before in an 8-4 loss to Acorn.

Ashlyn Bartell, Leah Gillette, and Rachel Huntze had a single each in the inning that also included three Nevada errors.

With a 6-0 lead after two innings, TC coach Shawn Cree

decided to give Scarlett Leeper, normally the regular catcher, some playing time in the circle. It didn’t work well. Leeper struggled with her control, giving up four walks and two hits. Starting pitcher Allison Cree came back in to pitch and got the last two outs in the five-run inning.

Cree had a fine game, allowing just two hits while striking out 11 in 5 2/3 innings.

Trinity finally got some breathing room when it scored three runs on just one hit in the fourth to stretch its lead to 9-5. Halah Nelson had the only hit, a bunt single.

The Lady Warriors added two more in the fifth, and closed out the game with five runs in the sixth. The game was ended with only one out in the sixth inning.

Cree, Nelson, and Huntze had two hits each in the Warriors’ nine-hit attack.

“Our starting lineup is pretty well set, so I gave some reserves some playing time tonight,” said the Trinity coach. “We still have a few holes to fill.”

Trinity’s next game will be rematch against Acorn at their place Friday.
