Linden will host annual Relay for Life
Cass County’s Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society this year will have the theme “A Wonderful World of Relay.”
The fundraising event will be 6 p.m. until midnight Friday, May 1, at Jack Hetherington Tiger Stadium in Linden.
The survivor/caregiver dinner will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on this date at the LindenKildare High School Cafeteria.
At 6 p.m., the traditional survivors’ lap will be the first walk around the oval track to acknowledge victory over cancer. Then, the survivors will be joined by caregivers for a second lap and everyone, including team members, for a third trip around.
A highlight of the evening will be the free and open Little Miss Disney Princess Pageant in two groups of those from 3 to 6 years of age and 7 to 10. Contestants are to be dressed as Disney princesses. The pageant begins at 7 p.m.
Other activities include a scavenger hunt, dancing and long jump contests, as well as a “Frozen” T-shirt and Mr. Relay selections.
This year’s fundraising goal is $65,000. Some 18 teams have registered, which already is one more than last year. Teams are encouraged to wear costumes, decorate their booths and be ready for an evening of fun to add to the festival’s atmosphere.
In one of the most meaningful parts of the Relay for Life, there’s lighting of luminaria. Candles, which have been purchased for $5 in memory of those who have battled cancer, will be placed around the track.
When evening comes, the stadium field lights will be lowered, the candle lamps lighted, and walkers will circle the field’s ring of lights while carrying glow sticks, flashlights and other types of illumination.
