Rabbits’ speed too much for New Boston

- By Louie Avery

NEW BOSTON, Texas–Atlanta’s defense couldn’t get off the field in the first quarter Friday at New Boston’s Lion Stadium.

Ironically, that was good news, because the Rabbits scored on two of their three offensive plays in the first 12 minutes en route to an easy 55-7 win over the outmanned Lions.

New Boston only had 27 players in uniform, and several going both ways.

The 4A Rabbs put the encounter out of reach with three quick touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 48-7.

Senior quarterback Jeremy Smith threw touchdown passes to Carson Lambert and Desmond Robinson, finishing the game 8 of 12 for 166 yards.

No Atlanta back carried the ball more than five times, senior Tyrell Phillips leading the way with 179 yards on four totes. All total, the Rabbs used seven tailbacks and gained 398 yards, averaging 16.5 yards per carry.

Atlanta’s defense held the Lions to 196 yards, only 48 in the second half.

New Boston took the opening kickoff and drove to the Rabbs’ 7 in 11 plays for a first down. That’s when Atlanta’s defense got tough, dropping the host for three straight losses, with a fourth-down pass overthrown.

The Rabbs scored on their first play from scrimmage when Phillips sprinted 90 yards down the left sideline in front of New Boston’s bench and fans.

Atlanta forced a punt on the Lions ensuing possession, taking over at its own 38. On first down, Smith threw a short pass to D’Corey Larry, who zig-zagged his way 55 yards to a first down at the Lions’ 7. Phillips scored his second TD on the next play.

Two offside penalties on the Rabbs helped New Boston find the end zone on its third possession. Atlanta was penalized 13 times for 100 yards.

Tyler Graham gave the Lions field possession when he recovered an onside kick at the Hares’ 49. Ten plays later, Davontae Wade dashed 18 yards for an NB score with 8:26 left in the half.

Two New Boston fumbles would result in two more scores for the Rabbs before intermission.

Smith scored on an eightyard run with 4:30 left, and Phillips got his third TD on a 68-yard sprint. He finished the first half with 165 yards on three carries.

Wade was the lone bright spot for the Lions with 110 yards on 15 carries.
