JAMES BOWIE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT,

Seven teams notch wins on tourney’s first day

SIMMS, Texas—McLeod girls, Bloomburg boys, DeKalb boys, Redwater girls and Union Grove boys were winners in the first day of the James Bowie Basketball Classic on Thursday.

The Avinger Lady Indians played two games and won both—one in dramatic fashion.

Cushing’s Bearkats played two games and went 1-1.

Today’s action starts at 9 a.m. in

the girls division as Bloomburg takes on Redwater. At 10:30, Union Hill plays Redwater in a boys’ game, and Union Hill and Hooks girls play at noon. The 1:30 game will pit the Union Grove and DeKalb boys against one another.

McLeod and Avinger girls take the court at 3, followed by Cushing and Bloomburg boys at 4:30. James Bowie clashes with Union Hill in a girls’ game at 6. The day of play will be capped with James Bowie going up against the Union Grove boys at 7:30.

GIRLS AVINGER 42, JAMES BOWIE 35

Avinger outscored James Bowie 23-3 in the fourth quarter to win in the most competitiv­e game of the day.

Iyona Parker led the Lady Indians with 15 points, including two 3-pointers. Brooke Kirkpatric­k added 10 for Avinger.

Andia Addy swished in 15 points for the Lady Pirates.

MCLEOD 66, BLOOMBURG 13

Tessa Glenn scorched the nets for 14 points, and McLeod cruised past Bloomburg.

Kyndal Shepard and Jilian Ellis chipped in 10 points each for the Lady Longhorns.

Kim Bestelle led the Lady Wildcats with 7 points.

AVINGER 38, HOOKS 31

Iyona Parker had a game-high 17 points as Avinger defeated Hooks.

The Lady Indians kept the lead throughout the game and at one time had a 9-point lead— the largest of the game.

Korey Brooks swished in 11 points for the Lady Hornets.

REDWATER 48, UNION HILL 15

Karlee Carmony netted 9 points as Redwater toppled Union Hill.

Four different Lady Dragons scored 6 points apiece.

Union Hill was led by Myah Hollins’ 6 points. BOYS BLOOMBURG 52, UNION HILL 38

Jordan Clayton poured in 23 points, the highest total of the day among all scorers, and Bloomburg trounced Union Hill.

Nathan McGill helped out with 10 points, including two treys.

Colton Wade paced the Bulldogs with 18 points, while teammate Colby Wade added 11.

DEKALB 56, CUSHING 36

Gunner Baxley lit up the scoreboard for 16 first-quarter points as DeKalb waltzed to an easy win over Cushing.

Baxley hit on five shots from 3-point land.

Vaz Jones nailed two treys and scored 12 for the Bears. Teammate Jovan Forte chipped in 9 points.

Tristin Wright netted a teamhigh 9 points for the Bearkats.

UNION GROVE 81, REDWATER 34

Austin Owens swished in 16 points, and Union Grove routed Redwater.

Chase Day hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for the Lions.

Union Grove’s Hayden Gray scored 14, while teammate Brennon Daughtry chipped in 10.

Brandon Brocks had a teamhigh 14 points for the Dragons.

CUSHING 46, JAMES BOWIE 29

Brandon Matlock popped in 18 points as Cushing’s solid play in the second half led to the win over James Bowie.

Wright helped out with 13 points for the Bearkats.

Bailey Obenosky paced the Pirates with 13 points.
