McLeod girls, DeKalb boys win three to finish unbeaten

SIMMS, Texas—The McLeod Lady Longhorns and the DeKalb Bears won all three of their games as the only undefeated teams in the James Bowie Classic that ended Saturday at the Pirates Gym.

DeKalb defeated Union Hill, 61-34, for a 7-1 record on the season, and McLeod (10-1) downed Redwater, 61-46.

In other boys games, Redwater defeated Bloomburg, 42-31, and Union Grove downed Cushing, 40-36.

The Redwater-James Bowie boys game was not called in before the press deadline.

In girls action, Redwater defeated James Bowie, 38-24, Hooks downed Bloomburg, 51-21, and Avinger defeated Union Hill, 27-10.

Boys

DEKALB 61, UNION HILL 34

The Bears exploded for 43 points in the first half to take a commanding, 43-12, lead.

Jovan Forte knocked down 22 of those points.

With a huge lead, reserves played almost all of the second half.

In addition to Forte’s 22 points, Tate Breashear had 11 points.

Noah Batts led Union Hill with 11 points that included three 3-point shots.

REDWATER 42, BLOOMBURG 31

The Dragons held a 14-6 advantage in the first quarter, and were never seriously

threatened.

Conner McKellor paced the winners with 15 points, and Justin Hurd led Bloomburg with 15 points.

UNION GROVE 40, CUSHING 36

As the final score indicated, this game was close all the way with Union Grove winning 3 of its 4 games in the tourney.

Austin Owens had another big game, scoring 20 points to lead Union Grove, and Parker Thornton added 10 points. Owens had a 29-point game against DeKalb on Friday.

Three players scored 9 points each for Cushing.

Girls

MCLEOD 61, REDWATER 46

The Lady Longhorns grabbed a big 41-22 halftime lead and coasted to an easy victory.

Selena Moon tallied 14 points and Stevie Jo Hamilton added 12 to pace McLeod as eight players scored.

Sydney Lewis and Katy Worrell had 10 points each for Redwater.

HOOKS 51, BLOOMBURG 21

After a slow start, Hooks got it going in the second and third periods, outscoring the Lady Wildcats, 31-5, for a 39-12 lead entering the final period.

Caitlyn Kyles led Hooks with 21 points.

REDWATER 38, JAMES BOWIE 24

The Lady Pirates kept it close, trailing only 14-11 after the first quarter.

But Redwater, playing its second game of the day, outscored James Bowie, 13-3, in the second period for a 27-14 advantage.

Scoring really fell way off in the second half with many easy shots missed.

Emily Ketchum and Root paced Redwater with nine points each, and Andia Addy led James Bowie with seven.
