Brewers hit four home runs in win

-

MILWAUKEE—Martin Maldonado hit a three-run homer and the Milwaukee Brewers went deep four times Monday night, spoiling the major league debut of Arizona pitching prospect Braden Shipley in a 7-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Scooter Gennett, Jonathan Villar and pinch-hitter Andy Wilkins also connected for the Brewers in the opener of a four-game series. Chase Anderson went five innings to beat his former team for his first win since June 8.

Acquired from the Diamondbacks in the offseason, Anderson (5-10) hadn’t made it through five innings in any of his previous five starts. This time, he gave up two runs and seven hits.

Gennett hit a 437-foot homer to straightaway center field off Shipley (0-1) with one out in the first to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. The right-hander was selected 15th overall by Arizona in the 2013 amateur draft.

Shipley helped his cause when he led off the third with a stand-up double, narrowly missing a home run. He later scored on a single by Jean Segura.

PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 0

MIAMI—Jeremy Hellickson is making himself an attractive target for shopping contenders—and one in particular—as the Aug. 1 deadline approaches.

Hellickson dominated the Marlins for a second straight start, throwing six innings of one-hit ball to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat Miami 4-0 on Monday night.

The 29-year-old has been the subject of trade rumors, some connecting him to the Marlins. Hellickson held Miami to a run over eight innings in a 4-1 win five days ago.

ANGELS 6, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Albert Pujols drove in four runs, Hector Santiago won his fifth consecutive start and Los Angeles beat Kansas City.

Pujols drove in two with a bases-loaded single during a four-run first, then added RBI singles in the seventh and ninth innings. He leads the majors with 26 RBIs in July, including 16 in his past eight games.

The Angels batted around in the first, which also included Daniel Nava’s sacrifice fly and Carlos Perez’s RBI infield single with two outs.

Santiago (9-4) is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA in July. He held the Royals to two runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

TIGERS 4, RED SOX 2

BOSTON—Jose Iglesias hit a tworun homer in the sixth inning, Justin Verlander pitched six solid innings and Detroit beat the Red Sox to spoil Drew Pomeranz’s second start with Boston.

Victor Martinez and James McCann also drove in runs for the Tigers. Detroit pulled within 5 1/2 games of idle AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Verlander (10-6) allowed one run and five hits and struck out five to pick up the victory. He is 3-0 in his last five starts.

Francisco Rodriguez earned his 28th save.

Pomeranz (8-8), recently acquired from the San Diego Padres, gave up four hits and struck out seven in six innings. Both of the runs he allowed came via Iglesias’ homer.
