Families, start your engines

‘The Great Food Truck Race’ is keeping it in the family

- By Andrew Warren

The engines are getting fired up, and so are the cookers. It’s time for the next season of “The Great Food Truck Race,” and this time things are being kept in the family.

“The Great Food Truck Race: Family Face-Off” premieres Sunday, Aug. 28, on Food Network, with Tyler Florence returning as host and six new teams competing to find out which one has what it takes to run the best food truck.

The word “family” in the title gives away this season’s twist. Not only do all six teams completely lack any experience running food trucks, but they’re also made up entirely of family members.

In Sunday’s premiere, the six teams kick things off with a funnel cake-eating contest at a Los Angeles theme park. After bidding for prime food truck spots on the park’s grounds, the teams have to hawk their tasty wares to hungry passersby, with the team that brings in the least cash having to hand over its keys and exit the race.

As with many reality competition series, the race doesn’t stay in one place for long. This season’s competitors are set to leave L.A. and go on a tour through southern California’s sun belt, with the teams taking their restaurants-on-wheels to Ventura County, Santa Barbara and Palm Springs before finally parking on beautiful Catalina Island for the grand finale, which airs Sunday, Sept. 25.

These teams aren’t just touring those beautiful sun swept shores for the fun of it, though. A mouth-watering $50,000 is at stake — not a bad payoff for spending a few days driving across sunny California while cooking up delicious food.

Of course, it’s not that easy; it never is. With strawberry festivals and ostrich egg hunts on the travel itinerary, the families must inevitably learn that many things — including family bickering — can act as major speed bumps on the road of this family adventure.
