Ex-Houston transit officer charged with assault in beating
HOUSTON—A Houston transit police officer who resigned after surveillance video showed him using a baton to hit a man 15 times has been charged with assault.
Prosecutors on Wednesday announced the indictment of Jairus Warren, who resigned this week after an internal review recommended his firing. Warren is accused of using excessive force in the Sept. 14 beating of Darrell Giles, who was slumped on a bench at a train station.
Online jail records didn’t indicate Warren was in custody Thursday or include attorney information.
Giles was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest, but the charges were later dropped. Both men are black.
Jail records show Giles was being held Thursday in an unrelated Sept. 22 case on a charge of assault on a public servant.
