Annual fishing derby set for this week at Spring Lake Park

The 25th annual fishing derby will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Spring Lake Park.

Organized by the Texas-side Parks and Wellness Department, the derby each year gives hundreds of people with disabilities and other special needs the chance to enjoy a day of fishing.

Parks and Wellness stocks the lake with extra fish each year to ensure there are plenty available to catch. Participants my keep the fish they catch or release them back into the lake.

The city’s Southwest Center will be closed all day Thursday and Friday so Parks and Wellness staff may attend the derby.
