A&M splits with Our Lady of the Lake

- By Brian Tyl

Batting practice broke out during a baseball game.

Texas A&M UniversityTexarkana’s comeback attempt against Our Lady of the Lake fell short in game 1, 11-10, but the Eagles kept the momentum going with a split in an 8-2 victory in the nightcap Friday at George Dobson Field.

Our Lady of the Lake and A&M-Texarkana combined for 28 hits, and the Saints, who used four pitchers edged the Eagles, who used five pitchers, 11-10 at George Dobson Field Friday in the first game of a doubleheader.

“The pitching was horrible, and it cost us,” A&M-Texarkana head coach Steve Jones said. “Offensively we did enough, and we let them off the hook a couple of times. We have to go out

and win that game when we score 10 runs.”

A&M-Texarkana racked up 15 hits, with four of those belonging to

Cameron Frost, who was a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

Frost blasted a 2-run round tripper to left field in the fourth, smacked a triple, hit a pair of singles and batted in four runs.

Pinch hitter Nick Anderson, who came in to bat in the seventh for the Eagles with his team down 11-7, hammered a 2-run homer to left. Frost belted his triple that hit high on the center field wall and gave the Saints’ outfielders trouble.

Kolton Perfect, who also hit a single, clubbed a double to left center to score Frost, and the Eagles trailed 11-10 with two outs. The next batter grounded out to end the game.

Perfect, who reached on a fielder’s choice in the first, scored on a single by Zach Boehler to give A&M-Texarkana an early lead.

The Saints scored a run in the second, but the Eagles put two more on the board.

Cade Davis, who went 3 for 4 with a single, a double and a triple, smacked a double to left field in the second and scored on Frost’s single to right. Cole Beckham, who had reached on a fielder’s choice also scored to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

With the bases loaded in the third,

Jose Diaz crushed a grand slam to give Our Lady of the Lakes a 5-3 edge.

The Eagles came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Bronson Butcher led off with a Texas Leaguer over the second baseman’s head. Austin Vicknair came in to run for Butcher.

Davis hit an RBI triple to right field to score Vicknair, and Darren Alexander singled up the middle to score Davis to knot it at 5-all. Frost walloped his humdinger and the Eagles took a 7-5 lead.

The Saints tacked on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to grab a 10-7 advantage. They scored another in the seventh, in what would be the winning run.

In game 2, Jacob Cobb-Adams gave up seven hits, walked two, allowed one earned run, and struck out five as the Eagles defeated the Saints 9-2.

Cameron Frost, who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, hit a solo home run in the seventh for A&M-Texarkana. Cade Thomason belted a solo homer in the seventh for the Eagles and was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI.

Alexander went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI for the Eagles, and teammate George Gugino was 2 for 2 with two scored runs.
