Pleasant Grove tops Atlanta with walk-off base hit

They saved the best for last.

Presley Hargrove knocked a walk-off single to left as Pleasant Grove edged Atlanta, 9-8, in a District 14-4A game at Lady Hawk Field Tuesday.

The Lady Rabbits took an 8-7 lead after scoring five runs on seven walks and an error in the top of the seventh.

“We stayed positive and kept fighting,” Pleasant Grove head coach Becca Collom said. “We just made it hard on ourselves. We scored six runs in the fourth and kind of sat on the lead.

“We have a young group, and we’re working towards cleaning some things up. I am proud of them and that’s a huge win for us.”

Dossey clubbed an RBI double down the left-field line to knot the game at 8-all. Hargrove smacked a single to left as Dossey raced around from second for the winning run.

Atlanta got on the board early with a pair of runs in the first. Victoria Bergt hit a roller down the third-base line and beat out the throw. Kinsey Kelly walked, and Rebecca Thomas reached on an error to load the bases for the Lady Rabbs.

Amanda Whatley and Victoria Johnson each got an RBI on walks to put Atlanta up 2-0.

PG’s Jones scored on a fielder’s choice after she reached first on a passed ball to make it 2-1 after the second.

The Hawks exploded for six runs in the fourth. Khadijah Oritola led off the frame with a shot through the hole at short. Kristen Key slugged a 1-run double to right. Jones walked, Dossey loaded the bases on an error, and Key scored on an error as Madison Allen reached first.

Pleasant Grove was up 3-2 with the bases loaded and no outs. Hargove hit an RBI single to right center, and one batter later, Hannah Snyder hit a sacrifice fly as the Hawks took a 5-2 lead. Emily Hilton reached first and a run scored on catcher’s interferen­ce. Oritola got an RBI when she walked.

Oritola went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI for PG, while Hargrove had a pair of singles and 1 RBI.

The Lady Rabbs had three hits and were walked 15 times. Whatley, Johnson, Cyndee Wood, Victoria Bergt, and Kinsey Kelly apiece had one RBI on walks.

Atlanta (14-8, 0-2) plays at LibertyEyl­au at 6 p.m. Friday, while Pleasant Grove (9-10, 1-1) hosts Pittsburg Friday at 6 p.m.
