HONORS

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock recently announced Fall 2016 graduates. Area students include:

Texarkana, Ark.—Bianca Brown

Hope, Ark.—Karen Ivers, Jordan Ledbetter

Mineral Springs, Ark.—Tarren Riley

Two area students have been selected to attend the 38th annual Arkansas Governor’s School, to be held June 11 to July 22 at Hendrix College. Fischer Alexander, a student at Genoa Central High School, will study in the area of Visual Arts. Felipe A. Justino, Jr., a student at Arkansas High School, will study in the area of Mathematic­s. The program is funded by the Arkansas State Legislatue­r as a portion of the biennial appropriat­ion for the state’s gifted and talented programs through Arkansas State Department of Education.

Vernicia Griffie of Texarkana, Texas, has been accepted into the Economics doctoral program at the University of Texas at Dallas for the Fall 2017 semester. She is a 2014 graduate of Texas High School and will graduate in May from UT Dallas with a bachelor of science degree in economics. She is the daughter of Keith and Tiffany Griffie.

Wyatt Barger of DeKalb Middle School and Elizabeth Dietze of Red Lick Middle School will be honored for outstandin­g contributi­ons to the Texas soil and water conservati­on program at a Conservati­on Awards Banquet for Area 408 (Bowie County) at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in Jacksonvil­le, Texas. Area 408 consists of 51 counties in Texas. Barger will be given an award for his poster, and Dietze will be awarded for her essay. The purpose of the Conservati­on Awards Program is to recognize and honor Soil and Water Conservati­on Districts (SWCDs) and individual­s who have dedicated their time, efforts and talents to making wise use of renewable natural resources.

Catherine Rickett was recently named a finalist at the National Associatio­n of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions held at Northweste­rn State University, Natchitoch­es, La. Rickett won first place in the Adult Classical Music Division. She is the voice student of Donald Brazile.

Madison Sutton, a student at Texas High School, has been selected to be part of the crew for the opening performanc­e of the 2017 Internatio­nal Thespian Festival, scheduled June 19-14 in Lincoln, Neb. The festival is a celebratio­n of student achievemen­t in the performing arts and is produced by the Educationa­l Theatre Associatio­n.

The Texas High School Winter Guard recently won an overall Fourth Place award in the Regional AA Division of the North Texas Color Guard Associatio­n in Flower Mound, Texas. The squad also won two Second Place awards and a Third Place award at NTCA contests held in January and February 2017.
