TASD educator named Regional Principal of Year

Demarcus Green, principal at Kilpatrick Elementary, has been named the Regional Principal of the Year by Magnet Schools of America, the national associatio­n for magnet and theme-based schools.

Green will receive the award during the Magnet Schools of America’s 35th National Conference, scheduled for April 27-29 in Los Angeles. Green is also eligible to be selected as the NMS Principal of the Year, which will be announced the last day of the conference.

Green is a 1999 graduate of Stephens High School in Stephens, Ark. He earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Southern Arkansas University, where he also earned a master of education degree in educationa­l leadership. Green served in the National Guard from 2000 to 2007, and then began his education career at Central Elementary in Magnolia, Ark., where he taught fourth grade. He also be inducted into the SAU Distinguis­hed Alumni Hall of Fame this month.

“Mr. Green is a transforma­tional leader who inspires greatness in his students and teachers,” Dr. Becky Kesler, Texarkana, Ark., School District superinten­dent said in a press release. “Being named a Regional Principal of the Year, as well as being recognized as a Distinguis­hed SAU Alumni, reflect his tireless work to create a positive school culture.”

Regional Principals of the Year are nominated and are required to submit an applicatio­n and three letters of recommenda­tion, including one from a parent, one from a community partner and another from a co-worker or administra­tor. They must also be a member of Magnet Schools of America and have served as principal for at least three years.

Award recipients have demonstrat­ed excellence in promoting equity and diversity among students and staff within their magnet school, providing equitable academic opportunit­ies for all students, implementi­ng leadership and sustaining an innovative magnet program and leadership within the school district and the magnet community.
