ARKANSAS HIGH RAZORBACKS THROTTLE HOPE, 33-0

Razorbacks score 24 in the first inning

- By Earl Gill

Hope had no answer for Arkansas High in varsity baseball at Razorback Field.

The Hogs throttled the Bobcats, 33-0, Friday in 4 1/2 innings.

“You never want to run the score up on a opponent. They’re a young team that committed some errors that helped us out. Kudos to

Hope for staying in the game, although the scoreboard said otherwise,” Arkansas High head coach Layne Berry said. “It’s difficult sometimes to finish when the other team has such a large lead.”

Drake Browning started on the hill for the Razorbacks. Browning struck out five and walked none in two innings of work. Browning gave himself some insurance at the plate. The sophomore flame-thrower stepped in the batter’s box four times in the first inning and smacked three RBI.

Browning was relieved in third inning by Brett Cox. By Berry’s admission, Cox is a senior that hasn’t pitched, but he ended up being the winning pitcher.

“Brett came up to me before the game and said ‘Coach, I can pitch?’ So I told him if situations arose during the game then I would give him an opportunity. I’m proud of how Brett pitched for us and how he handled his business at the plate for us,” Berry said.

Cox had an RBI single at the dish for the Hogs.

Browning and Cox combined to no-hit the Bobcats in five innings of work.

Austin Nix put his versatility on display for the Arkansas High faithful.

Nix went 4 for 6, including 8 RBI, two stolen bases and an inside-the-park home run.

“Austin Nix has been doing an incredible job for us. He’s the type of kid that will do whatever is asked of him, whether it’s pitching, fielding or hitting wise for us. He’s improving week to week and you can’t ask more from a kid,” Berry said.

Jadas Ross went 2 for 2 for Arkansas High and added two RBI in the rout.

“I’m glad we were able to get another conference win. We’re in the homestretch of the season and I’m sure any coach in the country would love for their club to mesh together the way we are right now. I hope we can take this momentum into our next game,” Berry said.

The Hogs are back in action today, traveling to take on Sheridan in another conference clash. Hope 000 00 — 0 0 12 Arkansas High (24)09 0x —33 16 0 Game called after 4 1/2 innings, run rule.
