Scout-O-Rama starts Friday at local park

- By Ashley Gardner

Regional Scouts are ready to show off skills they’ve learned in the program.

Scout-O-Rama, the regional Scouting showcase, takes place April 21-23 at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, Texas. The event will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m.

April 22.

Scout-O-Rama is held by the Boy Scouts of America Caddo Area Council and Girl Scouts Diamonds Council.

Hundreds of Scouts from all over the region are expected to attend. During the event, they will demonstrate Scouting activities and crafts.

“All the Scout troops there usually have some sort of activity at their campsite like rope climbing, a rope bridge or a knot-tying station,” said Jim Standridge, Scout-O-Rama public information director. “Basically what it does is teach the public about the many different things Scouting involves and people have the opportunity to learn what all kinds of different things Scouts do.”

There will also be a sanctioned chili cook-off.

“We have 20 or so teams signed up so far. The public can buy chili bowls for $5 and go around and sample all the chili,” Standridge said.

Other activities scheduled include hot air balloons, fireworks after dark, Pinewood Derby racing, fishing, Scout crafts, tomahawk throwing, Native American dancing, Scout 5K, cowboy shootout reenactors, canoeing and more.

The area of the park where Scouts are will close to the public Saturday afternoon, but they can watch fireworks from other areas of the park.

“The intent of opening this up to the public is to try and get young people interested in Scouting. Scouting is a fun thing to do. It teaches leadership and self-sufficiency,” Standridge said. “It’s free for the public to attend. We’d sure like to have people come out and have a good time. There is something for everybody in the family to enjoy.”
