Pittsburg capitalizes on L-E errors
Lady Pirates shut out Liberty-Eylau, 7-0
It wasn’t a pleasant day for Liberty-Eylau despite the beautiful weather.
The Lady Leopards committed four costly errors and were shut out by Pittsburg, 7-0, in a District 14-4A game at Lady Leopard Field at H.E. Markham Park Friday.
“We weren’t really focused, and Pittsburg capitalized on our errors,” Liberty-Eylau head coach Todd Tipton said. “We didn’t hit the ball well, and tonight was not our night. We’ll have to regroup and get ready for Pleasant Grove on Tuesday.”
Lady Pirate pitcher Bailey Smith pitched a complete game, struck out 11, walked two and gave up just four hits.
Tori Foster smacked a pair of doubles for the Leopards. Foster was thrown out at third in the first frame as she tried to extend her double into a triple.
Keeley Norris singled to center field for L-E in the second stanza, and Kayla Norris, her twin sister, hit a short ground ball and beat the throw out at first for a single in the fifth.
Leopard pitcher Bella Gunderson didn’t hit her groove until the third inning. Gunderson gave up just one run in the last five innings.
Pittsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Kaycee Parker hammered a 2-run homer to left field in the first.
Liberty-Eylau committed two errors in the second frame, and the Pirates got four runs across.
Amanda Garrison hit a 1-out single, and the next batter, Makenna Wood, reached on an error for
Pittsburg. Madison Busch bunted and reached on a fielder’s choice and Garrison scored on a throwing error.
Parker knocked in a run on a single up the middle, and Sydney Reynolds hit a 2-run single to right as the Pirates went up 6-0.
Gunderson struck out one, walked two, gave up 12 hits and six earned runs in the loss.
Pittsburg stranded nine runners, and the Leopards left four on base.
Liberty-Eylau plays at Pleasant Grove at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a District 14-4A rivalry game.
