Sportsplex to reopen facility’s child care center

- By Ashley Gardner

The Sportsplex, formerly known as Minton's, is preparing to reopen the childcare center once located at the facility.

Klondike Academy is slated to open June 5. The center is currently taking applications for children 6 weeks to 12 years old and has room for approximately 200 kids. About 30 jobs will be created once the center opens.

Kids who attend Klondike Academy will have a structured and fun learning environment.

“We've chosen a curriculum that engages a child's creative nature while they conduct handson, project-based investigations into the world around them,“said Pamela Reynolds, curriculum advisor and owner.

Children will learn from ten core components including social-emotional, physical, language, cognitive, literacy, mathematics, science and technology, social studies, the arts, and English language acquisition.

“The main thing we're trying to accomplish is basically building their minds to learn,” said Angela Evans, chief of marketing for HealthCare Express, the company that owns The Sportsplex. “At an early age their minds are like sponges so we're going to instill learning in them at an early age. We want the parents to know they're not just dropping them off at a babysitter. They'll go through a structured curriculum designed for their age group.”

The center will also offer fitness classes for kids, intro to Spanish, music classes, art classes, leadership training and a summer program.

“The summer program last the same hours as the full-time daycare. We're going to have some cool clubs for them to participate in- robotics club, green thumb, busy builders, a wellness club, STEM club, iron chef and painting club,” Evans said.

Reynolds hopes the Klondike Academy will have a positive impact on the community.

“Imagine a community driven by adults who had leadership, confidence and strength of purpose instilled in them since childhood. That is what Klondike Academy will do. That's who we are,” Reynolds said.

Klondike Academy will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
